Battery support for IID

Battery support for IID

I am about to put the hard earned down on a GAP IID however I need information on the following:
The information I have is that when updating an ECU it is preferable to provide some support for the battery in case of draining it.
Can anyone please recommend what are acceptable methods of doing this as I see that battery support units cost more than the GAP tool.

I use a CTEK MSX25 on supply mode wired to the towing socket.

you can usually get away with all of these options together

1) charging the battery the previous night
2) turning the interior lights off (hold the center button till it flashes)
3) Having a normal battery charger connected while to do it

Just use jump leads off of another vehicle

I don’t think that really helps keep the voltage up.
In fact it’s more likely to make it drop over 10 mins +

Thanks for the suggestions, I see I can use a battery charger, what amperage is suggested, would a 15Amp be OK?

Why would it make the voltage drop? If it did you would never be able to jump start another vehicle

GAP do not recommend using a battery charger, it must be a power supply.
Before any process is started the Iid tool will do a power check and will not proceed if the battery is not sufficiently charged, I have never found an additional power supply necessary providing you are sensible and don’t get carried away with how long you play with the Iid tool, use a smart battery charger before or after a session for as long as necessary by all means, but not during. Thumbs Up

Why would it make the voltage drop? If it did you would never be able to jump start another vehicle

Thumbs Up No reason why jump leads cannot be used if needed providing the donor vehicle engine is kept running and the negative lead is connected to the chassis or engine earth points on both vehicles not the negative battery post and is connected last and removed first to prevent gas from the batteries exploding.

Thanks all for the information, I can go ahead with any reflashing with confidence hopefully.
I did reflash some years ago with my faultmate and that was no problem but after reading GAP manual thought I would ask some questions.

DSL: Will I need my welding helmet?? Whistle
