And it's now looking likely to get unpleasant with the Belarus president threatening the EU's gas supply if they take action against him.

This isn't going to end well.

And considering we’re sitting on masses of gas but the Twitteratie doesn’t like us extracting it so it says in the ground. Now that’s also madness. Thumbs Up

Yes, but there's a reason for that. Unless you don't consider that the ongoing "burning fossil fuels is screwing the climate" discussion is relevant, that is. Wink

Better than extracting it, and making a whole load of pipelines from here to the other side of the EU, would be more non-fossil fuel systems of power generation.

You can't do much about not screwing the climate if a nutter in a foreign land cuts off energy supplies, the economy stops and people start freezing to death. Besides, it'd be an ideal place to stuff with CO2 when CCS is worked-out! Getting it out from under the UK has got to be better than shipping it (very bad for the climate) in from the Middle East and having to compete with China for those said same supplies = price instability and instability in availability.

Belarus is needling the situation between Poland and the EU: Poland don't want the migrants; the EU say they must take them. Poland say they have ultimate sovereignty in law; the EU says they don't. Belarus are stirring things - probably as a puppet of Putin.

It's a good job the UK maintains enough reserves of gas to last a month or so. Oh, wait, no we don't... Rolling Eyes

It's a good job we get very little gas from Putin and his mates. A bigger issue for those closer to the EU / Commie Motherland border, of course.

So far as replacing the commie gas with other sources, it would take no more time, and would likely have a longer term lifespan, if we used other sources of energy other than gas.

We're an island surrounded by tidal waters, we have huge wind resources in easy to exploit shallow waters of the North Sea, we can produce SMRs. All much better than being beholden to despots in other lands.

Agreed but once the vocal social media minority get started on Twitter they’ll get binned. The loud minority started with their the “ban fracking” cardboard placards and that defacto happened. Same will happen to mini nuke plants. Rolling Eyes

Apparently we are just going to keep building more and more wind farms (not sure where they are going to put these as the countryside (and seashore) up here is fairly littered with them... one stated government aim is to generate 40Gw of power from wind farms .... hmmm and the carbon cost of these turbines ? Whistle

Plus no leckie when the wind don’t blow. High pressure system over us in winter, no wind and temps well below zero, windmills ain’t going to do diddly-squat. That’s OK, we’ll just wear all our clothes until we freeze. Thumbs Up
