Best cruise control speed for maximum MPG??
I've been trying out various cruise speeds to see what effect (if any) i can have on my crappy average 22mpg (05 HSE Auto).
This is what i've had so far over a flatish 10 mile journey:
75 mph (21.1 mpg) obviously this one is theoretical as you are not allowed to do this and quite right too.
70 mph (21.4 mpg)
65 mph (23.1 mpg)
60 mph (23.0 mpg)
55 mph (29.4 mpg) thats twenty nine point four MPG!
I'm determined to annoy all other drivers with my 55mph until i see the mythical 30.0 on the mpg computer.
So is 55 the magic number for best MPG on cruise control??

I've tried this as well. I got about the same at the lower end of the speed range, although I managed just over 1 to the gallon more at 70 ...Regards,

Trip comp lies!!! It usually reads 2-3 OVER. I often do long runs (500 miles) at 60 got up to 36mpg on road tyres or as low as 30. Into or with the wind can make 5 mpg difference. Tuical would be 30mpg. Would get 28 mpg with cruise set at 75mph. Actual miles vs fuel in, not tri comp.
PS U driving a V8 with those numbers?? If not you have binding braked or EPB or something else causing way too low mpg. Check wheels not getting hot, would point to binding calipers.

I usually set my cruise to 75 (approx.) and done 3 or 4 motorway trips recently and got 32 MPG on all trips.
I'm sure Wiggs mentioned to me a while back when he did my 4x4 info that his D3 had cr@ppy MPG until he'd reset quite a few stuff. Maybe that would be worth a try instead of lowering the speed
Darren.

By reset do you mean re-map the ecu?
or do i actually reset the software in my D3?

See my PS above, dgarside don't believe the tri comp, it's way too optimistic. Only thing that can be trusted is actual fuel in vs miles on a spreadsheet. I run 2 D3, both getting 25.something, one after 61k miles and other after 13k miles, both 06MY auto D3s.
tanisdraven, 36 was a trip from S Wales to Perth with a serious tail wind, going into such a wind can have me down to 27 on a similar trip.

Right - it does seem that the D3 really does suffer badly from wind
I still have not seen anything near the 30s though. I'll keep trying and measure it against the actual fuel used.

I get an indicated 28 mpg at 70mph cruise, althouigh I used to get 33mpg prior to recent recall work - but that's a different thread. These are also 6-up figures so a fairly well loaded car.
Now getting 32.7 brim to brim from my 07 auto over a week / 500 miles. Dropped to 27.9 when "making progress" with a Frontrunner rack on I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

It amazes me how different auto d3's average mpg's can be. I can't event get close to that at 55mph cruise in a bog standard hse.
