I've only owned one diesel engined vehicle & that was 13 years ago. Does the D3 benefit from the use of "Premium" Diesel. I'm used to peformance petrol engines that need Super Unleaded (Shell Optimax etc.).
Is there an equivalent type of Diesel & does the D3 go better/do more mpg if used?
Thanks.

BP ultimate is about 4p more expensive but from my experience is worth it. I expect to be told otherwise! Loving the power of the TDV8!

Thanks VA. Does Shell do an equivalent? I regularly use a Shell station that is always amongst the cheapest in the Bristol area.

As long as you don't use the cheaper supermarket fuels it doesn't seem to make any difference in my experience. Standard Shell diesel seems to work best for me and is generally cheaper around here too The End

First time I used BP Ultimate I was amazed at the difference. However, since that time I haven't seen the same effect. I even wonderd if they made the first batch of the stuff to be 'extra special' in order to tempt people across.
Supermarket fuel would never be my first choice but I have used it and noticed no difference. In fact, my posts on '30mpg in a D3' were done after a fill of the supermarket stuff. Go figure

Are there any products that you can mix with the diesel that help with mpg and wear & tear? Loving the power of the TDV8!

I dont doubt your figure but cannot for the life of me see why the "supermarket stuff" will make any difference to your MPG.
Not long ago, before the big black cloud descended over hertfordshire and beyond, I had cause to visit Buncefield oil depot and watched the filling of several tankers ready for the off.
The fuel from the holding tanks whether it be for Shell, BP, Texaco, Sainsburys, Tesco, morrisons etc, was all common fed from the underground pipeline that fed Buncefield.
I was led to believe by the operations manager there that the fuel was the same for all.
I stand to be corrected but I believe this to be the case. more at home on two wheels than four but i reckon i can tip this baby just enough.......

My understanding is that all types of petrol or diesel are basically the same.
However, the big difference is in the blending of additives. Supermarkets (allegedly) use less/inferior additives to keep the cost low.
Also, petrol can "go off" fairly quickly, particulary Super Unleaded. This was evident in recent tests run by the motoring press & Fith Gear. Perhaps the same is true of diesel.

The 'base fuel' is the same stuff for all, however, each supplier has their own feed at the holding depot and each respective tank has its own set of 'additives'.
Many of the cheaper brands supply their forecourts with the base fuel only. A couple of the supermarkets (Tesco for sure) have thier own additives just like the major oil companies.
It used to be up to the tanker drivers to add the additives, but now it is done in bulk at the point of delivery (to the tanker).
