More Big Air coming up the same new track followed by how deep in the ground (just to give a comparison about high high he was!)

Prior to that fun, Duncan decided to try the "really steep hill over there......"

As is usual, the pic doesn't really show HOW steep this bit was.

Is that winch rope under tension? Shocked The observer is a bit too close if it is.

Could have been Sonic0 with all three legs taken out Shocked

Come on Dunc you are a seasoned 4x4 er, gentle reminders to less experienced crew never go amiss Thumbs Up the only way we all learnt was via good advice and training Very Happy

Certainly don't want to see a accident on a D3 event

We can't blame Dunc here, he was inside the vehicle. We should be blaming me, as I was coordinating the operation from the outside. Embarassed

And in my defence, I feel it was a reasonably safe operation - don't judge me on the basis of one still photo! The biggie, which Tony pointed out at the time, was that the vehicle was on a slope of > 45deg and was supported only by the winch rope. Another static line on to a tree would probably have been a good idea.

Nobody died.

How would the static line work then, as you'd still need to adjust it as it comes up the hill wouldn't you...?
Yes yes yes, i know I need to go on the training to fully understand the implications & to practice it, but just wanted to get an idea.... Anyone?

Would be interested in a mid-week (low cost Embarassed ) winch training day at some point (but I don't have a winch... Embarassed ) Anyone else?

We were all well away from the line in the trees... and in that still with Sonic - he was at the side for a brief moment checking the line out and passing on info to Dunc before he started to pull.

Points taken though. If that winch line had gone with the weight of the D3 pulling on the slope...... Shocked

Yes please... and I have no winch either... but having the knowledge to know what to do of there is only one winch and its in this situation, would be invaluable.

Surely the point is this......
If the observer knew the winch wire was under tension & decided that the risk that would be born to
go in and observe the rope was acceptable, then fair enough. Other may not have made that decision.

What would be much worse is if the observer was not fully aware of the consequences.

One can never tell where a winch rope or wire will fail. I have seen appow 10 winch wire failures over 25 years or so and the vast majority have occurred at either the hook end or near the failead.
