Bikes on Roof ?

I know that there are millions of threads on racks, bars, tow ball mounts etc etc But I'd like to know if anyone mounts their bikes on the roof of their D3 ? (no pun intended)

To me it seems too high to be practicle but I'm ready to be surprised.

I want to carry 5 bikes (eventualy). Can't go on the tow ball, there's a caravan there. Difficult to go on the Caravan for various reasons (front or back).

Any advise appreciated.

PS: It's getting hard (sorry) to write any posts without noticing certain connotations

Yes, but it's a bit lethal getting them on and off. OK for occassional use, especially if you already have the Thule kit.

you can put a ladder in the trunk, as I do when I carry kayaks on the roof (I need to tie a rope over the kayak)

I found a small V-ladder (household type) thats fits exactly between the back of the 2nd row seats and the tailgate. It is about 3 cm high and hardly takes any space for luggage away.

I've mounted loads on the roof

I used to carry five solo bicycles on the roof of the old Td5, using three Thule racks and two cheaper (and older) ones from Halfords. Getting the pedals in the right place was a bit of a faff - the bikes had to be quite close together. Taking the pedals off first got round that, but that seemed like more trouble than aligning the pedals when mounting.
Haven't had the need to carry quite so many since we got the D3 - but we have had three solos and a tandem on the roof at the same time (in total weighing more than the five solos did).
I use a small folding aluminium step to get the extra altitude - I don't have great upper body strength, it is more about technique (and always remembering not to leave the extra step at home).
