D5 vs Discovery Vision

I seem to remember a fairly positive response on the forum to the Discovery Vision concept vehicle. It seems like the D5 is polarizing for some, they either like it or despise it. I found images of both and the only major difference I can spot is the size and offset (not pictured) of the wheels.

I think that are identical, every time I see this I think that I will never be able to understand how it is possible that having the Vision concept within reach since 2014 ....would have been speculating so very much with what it was going to be the D5, Land Rover always does the same, he did it from the evoque concept.... and before too and, if god does not remedy it, I'm afraid they will do it with the DC100, new Defender, very in spite of the bad critics that obtained Shocked Shocked Banging Head Banging Head

I genuinely believe that took on board the harsh criticism that they received from the DC100 concept car and that it will look nothing like that. The real thing, when it does come, may look a lot less Defender like than the DC100 concept and a great deal more like the D5 that we see here.

Expect more, cosmetic only, styling links with the past though - think marginally squarer, but with round lamps, (both front and rear) a dummy Puma bonnet bulge and some colour keyed flared arches.

I loved the vision but not so much the D5 (even though I'm ordering one Laughing ) it looked very good apart from the rear and indeed the same as the D5. Its the visions the technology and interior that got me very excited with solid floors instead of carpet with those seats that move on rails and come out to make a van would have been awesome in the final car and a real step above the competition.

The final D5 packaging was a bit of a let down, the boot space is a lot less practical and even though the vision did not have a split tailgate i never dreamt in a million years they would delete such a successful and loved discovery feature (well for me).

Additionally the engines were not announced in the Concept and the final lineup was a let down.

This is interesting, I was only thinking the other day about how much I liked the Vision, but was disappointed with the D5. Those photos show part of the issue, the rear end looks out of proportion without very large wheels, its suffers from 'small wheel syndrome' common to many car models.

I would like to see a side on photo of a D5 with 22 inch wheels to see how close it looks to the Vision.

I've wondered if LR puts spacers on the wheels of the release vehicles, they always look so much more planted than the production version. If you recall the disco sport release video it looked nothing like the production version. The disco vision prototype must be on 24" wheels Shocked

I've been trying to work out how the wheels are so much larger, yet the Vision's flanks (beneath the waistline, but above the wheels) are no less massive.

It appears that the larger wheels have been found the necessary space by simply raising the ride height. With a nice gap underneath and concept car sized wheels, it looks a more like a purposeful off roader and a lot less like a slab sided MPV. I can see why it was better received.

Could this have been the original design intent? Could too much time have been spent perversely developing "sporty" characteristics at the Nurburgring and having to lower the C of G compromised the proportions? The curve of the rear arch on the Vision runs parallel to the surface of the tyre but on the D5, there's a mismatch.

Here's my one on 22 inch wheels. Light not great, but a similar colour to the Vision.

Of course the Vision also has flush glass and no door handles, both of which make it look more slippery as well.

Thumbs Up My preference would definitely be a lighter colour and 22 inch wheels.

Is that photo taken at access height? Do you have a photo at normal running height?
