Good morning hope you are all enjoying the spring weather.
I have got an occasionally sticking egr valve on my05.
I have managed to muddle along using a fuel additive for about 2 months now but I have decided to blank them off .
Can u blank off a sticking valve and
Does it effect emissions for the mot
And is it difficult to do
I bow to the knowledge of the collective

Yes, blank them off. Ebay have a pair of plates for less than £10
It will not affect emissions, and currently, a blanked EGR valve will not fail an MOT
It is a little fiddly due to lack of access, but do-able in around an hour or so

Yes blank them off before it fails completely and then she might not start. I speak from bitter experience It isn't a difficult job, there are some great instructions on the Bell Auto Services web site, which include how to remove the butterfly valve. (Don't ignore that part) Landroverer

Hi Doug
I blanked the EGRs using the Bell Autos kit a couple of years ago on my 05 car. Followed their instructions to the letter and it went well. The only slight problem was leavering the butterfly from the housing. There are a couple of threads around the site that have suggestions to help do the job which were a bonus.
I hadn't been having any problems with the car but having done it on a Freelander 1 that did and seeing a massive improvement I did it as a pre emptive strike. The car has been through a couple of MOTs with no probs. I've not noticed any difference to the driving experience but it appears to do about 1mpg or so extra.
The job took almost exactly the time advertised until I dropped a Torx bit into the engine bay at the last minute and spent 2 hours trying to retrieve it.......Doh!
Cheers
Glen

Good choice Doug. get em blanked off. No issues what so ever.
I did it with mine with help from a friend, I did the working and he did the talking. that helped me. Im not an experienced tool wielder or a natural born mechanic. i have as they say 10 thumbs.
I bought the kit from Bell. I quickly went threw the info and gave it a go. 1 hour later the bonet was back on and my hands clean. its what you guys call a Doodle to do. just dont be afraid of the big plastic cover that greets you when you open the bonet.

I am looking forward to doing the valves in some sort of perverse way.
I love messing about with stuff but don't have much experience with cars.
It just looks like a mix of metal and tubes to me ,luckily my brother is going to do it with me and he has a lot more experience
And we are going to do the cam belts and an oil change at the same time.
Fingers crossed

Hi all,
I have an 07 plate D3, can I blank the egr or is mine too late a model ?
I've heard if you do put a blank kit on, you then need a full remap ! I got this from an ATS Tyre fitter, so I'm not sure if its correct.
I know my N/S egr is playing up intermittently, so I was wondering if I blank both together, my problems would be solved.
Regards
Andy

Depends on whether your D3 is an 06MY car or not, LandyAndy68.
My D3 is on an 07 plate but is an 06MY car. I've blanked my EGR valves and you certainly don't need a full remap if you blank them .
Check your VIN to see if you're on a 6A or a 7A.

Steve,
Thanks for that, I've looked at my Vin number, how do I tell if it's an 06 or 07 model, where will the year be displayed within the vin.
Does having blanking plates affect the mpg or cold starting ?
Regards

If you have an 06MY car, it will take the form: SALLAAA176AXXXXXX
If you have an 07MY car, it will take the form: SALLAAA177AXXXXXX
6A's, you can blank.
7A's, you can't at the moment without the engine management light coming on.
Further details on VIN numbers here.
Blanking the EGR valves does not seem to have any effect whatsoever on MPG or starting from cold.

Morning Steve,
Thanks for your help, I hope I'm not giving you any problems here, my Vin number has now confused me, or is it newer than I thought. I bought the car on an 07 plate, put my private 06 plate on it. Looking at the vin, is it newer possibly an 08
I've got my vin number, it goes :- SALLAAA138A******.
Does this shed any light on my year, I have to say I'm a bit foxed on this one.
I'd like to thank you for your help and advice, it's much appreciated.
Regards
Andy

Yes. Yours is an 08MY car on an 07 plate. It's also an automatic.
Blanking EGR valves is not currently an option for you, unfortunately. £250 bill every time they fail, I'm afraid. 2021 BMW iX3 Premier Edition in Carbon Black ⚡️🔌

Steve,
thanks for your help, I'm pleased to have a newer car than I thought, yes it's an auto box too. It's not really given me much grief, it's a tidy motor, I Love it. The egr on the n/s has intermittent fault, I guess it's time for a new one, I think I'll do the repair myself, I'm pretty sure I can do it myself while overseen by some tech Buddies.
Thanks again Steve
