Blocking the Air Flow to the Radiator - Extreme cold days |
|
Hi All;
I just tried this today, i removed the front grille, and placed a card board cut-out in front of thr radiator, from the top all the way down, and then replace the grille back, blocking the air flow to the radiator.
Had few journeys today and i noticed that the car improved in performace, warming up and maintaining the temperature.
i had an average of 3 celsius till 7 celsius, and the temp. needle stayed in the middle at all times.
I'll be runing the experiment for the next few days.
If you seen the "Ice truck" program on tv, that' where i have taken the idea from, and from black some london cabs.
regards

this will also block air flow to the inter-cooler - surely this will reduce engine air charge efficiency? BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

you can't block the intercooler by blocking airflow to the radiator.... it's underneath it TBH it's not something i'd do as the engine cooling fan strategy is pretty complex and is 'aware' of ambient temperature, you could get seriously caught out if stuck in traffic after a blast down a fast road....

Tarping your rad is very common where I live but not necessary on my V-8 LR3. Temperatures average about -30c and my LR3 warms up very quickly without blocking the rad. Most of the drivers remove the tarp in anything warmer than -10c to prevent overheating.
I actually live in Inuvik where season 2 of Ice Road Truckers was filmed.
Cheers,
V

This is exactly where the idea came from. Next time they are recording the series, drive by the cameras, do like a 360 spin, and make sure the disco3 sticker is visible
We have watched the series, and we were very impressed how you continue to keep going even on those temperatures, for us (Brazilians) this is something we only read on books.
