Blowing around drivers side exhaust to manifold area.

Hi,
On my sons 2010 3.0 HSE, there is a puff of smoke coming from the rear of the engine on start up, only noticeable when the bonnet is open. There is a blowing sound, engine running, coming from the drivers side front wheel arch, along with some sooty deposits on the rear heatshield in the exhaust to manifold/turbo area. I cannot feel any real exhaust gasses coming out by hand, but it is difficult access.
The car also displays restricted performance error message after driving a short distance.
Cannot see any error codes with a cheap obd2 scanner.
Has anyone had a similar issue, and what was the cure?
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Could be the EGR pipe to the exhaust manifold. These can become weakened over time and blow through.

Could also be the cross over pipe, situated at the rear of the engine. Is there a smell of exhaust gas in the engine compartment? You will need to get a good indy to test it.

Hi,
There is no smell of exhaust fumes in the engine bay once the engine has started. It seems like a valve operates immediately after starting and shuts off the leak.
If the engine has been running then switched off and is restarted within a few seconds (whilst the whirring noises are still there) there is no smoke discharge. The smoke only appears when the engine has been stopped for in excess of 1 min.
Thanks

Hi, we have found the manifold to EGR pipe is blowing. Tried to remove the pipe, after all the heatshields, but are really struggling with the rear screw on the EGR end. Tried removing the whole egr but cannot get is out, it is too wide to come up through the engine bay.
Has anyone tried this repair successfully with the body on?
Any tips to get the pipe off and the new one on?
Thank you.

Hi,
I have just finished fitting the new pipe, took a long time working from the wheel arch.
Wrapped the insulation with some copper wire to hold it tight, making access to the rear top bolt better.

The holes in the old pipe are quite large.

Not a problem. Just a shame a bolt snapped and we had to drill it out to retap the hole. Not something that can be done with the body on.
