For sure the HID conversion would overcome this as the ballasts regulate the voltage to the bulb. The Pro kit can work with 9v to 32volts Smile

Note that many upgrade bulbs have various gases in them and this is to allow the filament to get hotter, whiter but of course the downside is they dont last as long.

I will offer a complete kit to replace all the rear bulbs in the D3 - having done this on my sport it not only looks the dogs its nice to know i shouldnt have to go back in and remove the lights for years

The resistors is interesting but wouldnt recommend it as they get bloody hot! And the D3 halogen lights are not brilliant with the full voltage to them in the first place

Promotion code for D3 members for a HID kit is disco3hid - for a very nice discount (trade price in fact)

Regards
Ian

I upgraded to Osram Nitebreakers two months ago and both went at the same time last week. the bog standard Halford had been ok for 8 months.

I might fit a supressor for now if this is going to continue.

Interesting upgrade idea there, I assume this is an LED lamps option?

Do you have a link for it?

Same model, same problem, I can now change both headlight bulbs in under 3 minutes, ive done it that many times. Tried every bulb you can think of but nothing lasts more than 6-8 weeks so I just buy e-bays cheapest now.

I've a 56 plate D3 and I seem to be getting through Passenger side headlamps at a rate of knots - 4 this year. On the plus side, I'm a ninja at replacing them ... Every cloud.

I've tried top of the range Ring and Osram extra bright ones and run of the mill ones from Halfords without much difference. Will try the dealership next time.

High brightness bulbs have a much shorter life than standard bulbs. Osram extra life will last longer, if a little dimmer.

Dia.mond do you have xenons or halogens? If the latter then poss someone has swapped them out but the CCF hasn't been changed to reflect this. Means they don't have the lower voltage start up to preserve the halogen bulb.

Are you guys sure you don't have alternator regulation problem?

This can be checked by revving engine and see if lights brighten with revs. Easier to observe on rear side lights.

Or check voltage at battery using DVM and again rev engine and check if voltage fluctuates. Anything above 14.6V is a potential problem.

Thanks for so many replies!

All copied on the extra bright bulbs - I'll try the long life Osram ones next time round. Thank you.

The lamps are halogens; what should I look for to see if the CCF has been changed?

Just tried the revs vs brightness to check the alternator regulator and no perceptible change. I will check the voltage at the weekend.

All really helpful. I will let you know whether I identify any issues.

Reason I ask is you have an 06SE that would have had xenons from the factory. Poss the previous owner sold them on then bunged in a cheap pair of halogens. I had the bulb's failing on SWMBO's 06SE after I did that & put her xenons in mine. Look at the CCF & see if lights are set to HID, then they need changed to Halogen or you'll continue going through bulbs. Someone with an IID Pro or open license widget would be able to look at that & change it. Thumbs Up

I might be tempting fate but I have only changed 2 stop light bulbs and one side light in 11 years of D3 ownership. I am thinking of changing the xenon bulbs as they are getting on a bit.

I went through a lot of headlight bulbs, particularly the expensive + 50% variety until I changed to Halfords heavy duty bulbs which lasted for ages. I have since changed to xenons which is a very worthwhile upgrade
