well, ive now got through 10 bulbs in about 1 month.
Each time the bulb looks like it blown a piece out of the inner glass bulb widget - I'll try and get a photo.
I dont think its a dodgy batch . I'm guessing that the investigation to track down the problem isnt covered by extended warranty so i can either :
1) pay for a couple of hours labour to diagnose the problem (£200 ish in charges)
2) spend £200 on bulbs (they should last approx 28 months)
3) get advice from the good people on Disco3 and fix myself
Any ideas
Perhaps I'm braking too hard and forcing too many volts down the wire Duncan

Now this is a long shot, but still worth some consideration.
Could it have anything to do with the swinging weights eventually chaffing the towing electrics cable.
It's always been in my mind since I fitted mine as it does run fairly close to the weights.
As said, just a long shot!I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

I'd think something like this would be right up TFC's street, then you can spend the savings on beer Dr. Ian Malcolm:

TFC will be the first port of call if I cant sort it out myself. I was going to ask him to wire up my replacement horn as the LR one keeps getting full of mud and sounds like Noddy - so he could do both at the same time.
using my backwards logic i thought if i dont go to a main dealer I could afford about 280 bulbs butif I dont go to TFC I could only afford about 140 bulbs Duncan

Replaced another bulb this evening and whilst the weather was nice thought I would crawl under the car and check the weights. They are rubbing on the tow electrics cable but not so much that they have worn away the protective covering the wires are in. All looks OK (after I had washed all the dust/dirt out of eyes )

The fact that the bulbs are physically broken / cracked suggests to me that either : -
1./ There is some kind of mis-alignment going on, perhaps the bulb is pressing somewhere it shouldn't once the unit is back in place?
2./ There is maybe a poor connection at the base / bulb holder causing some localised heating of the internal (bulb) connection wires?
The broken bulb clue kind of rules out an electrical / voltage fault.
Edit; I've just taken a closer look at mine and to be honest, I can't see how the bulbs could go in wrong,
Is it always the same bulb that fails?Clive

Vovlo and saab , is that because theya re driven by old farts who always keep one foot on the brake
the glass doesnt break itself. its always the brake filement that blows, the side light is OKDuncan

Duncan, have you had someone follow you around for a half hour of different driving styles to see if your brakes are flashing by themselves? Either something is turning them on for you, or you're resting your foot on the pedal far too long and cooking them. They have to be energised to burn out, so something must be doing this. Perhaps your brake switch is broken and the contact is rattling the bulbs into pulsing?
If you can't have someone follow you; how about jury rigging a small bulb taped to the dash with a wire feeding back to the light clusters so you can see when they're on? It might just give you the clue you're looking for.Dr. Ian Malcolm:

they are only on when i put my foot on the brake, and as I do mostly motorways miles thats not very often.

Oi! I was a Volvo driver; in my T5, brakes were used only immediately before switching the engine off. Corners were dealt with by accelerating hard to stiffen up the suspension Dr. Ian Malcolm:
