Blown Turbo

Had the Turbo let go at 55K, the symtoms apart from the lack of power - when trying to drive fast the special program fault message came up, or on the roll off of the throttle it came up as engine fault, it would do this everytime you went fast but always cleared when you stopped and re-started - is this common with the D3 or the start of things to come?

A few of us have had it. It's the variable vanes in the turbo that jam open/closed with soot.

Before you rush into the dealer and part with the best part of 2000 quid... do what I did!

Buy the turbo clean product from innotech and get your vehicle up on a four poster ramp, disconnect the exhaust from the manifold, follow the instructions and clean the turbo.

Worked for my fault which was almost identical to yours and so far has cost me 30 quid in parts and an afternoon of my time at a mates garage.

Having now researched the problem extensively, taken loads of advice (some from the best of the best on this forum - thanks guys!) and spoken to LR techs (unofficially and off the record), I have learnt loads.

Firstly, supermarket fuel is crap and creates extensive soot that makes the vanes in the turbo stick.

Secondly, the dealers will always want to solve the problem with a new turbo

Thirdly, Innotec have developed a great product and saved loads of turbos from turbo heaven

It has certainly worked for me (if that changes I will post on here to let you know), but I am heading to the Pyrenees in a couple of weeks and have no intention of replacing my turbo before I go!

Hope that helps

Steve

Mikey - is this software update to move the vanes around a bit more often so that they don't get stuck?

If so, any idea which software patch it is and if there is any advantage to applying it to a D3 whose turbo is currently working fine (preventative maintenance and all that).

Cheers,
Paul

Yup, every time the ignition is switch ed on, the VNT goes through a full sweep (that it otherwise probably wouldnt get)

No entirely sure of the patch number, but it has been out for easily over 2 years if thats any help. Its always going to be an advantage having it, over not having it...

Thanks a lot Bow down

So can we assume that this patch has probably already been automatically applied to the majority of vehicles that have been plugged into IDS during routine servicing etc during the last couple of years?

Or was it a patch that is only applied following a fault or following customer complaint?

Cheers,
Paul

Any info on this patch will be greatly received...

As per discussions with the dealer this morning....we are both of the opinion that my turbo vanes are sticking and causing my ongoing fault...
The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

JF they seem to be dancing around the handbag with your and not changing your turbo, unless I've missed that. Sounds a bit like they might have to try more expensive options as everything else they've tried comes to zip! Just a thought. Thumbs Up

It will only have been done if you have already had a blown turbo (or turbo fault), or an ECM update. It is NOT done at routine servicing...

If anyone has access to GTR, details of the version of IDS that patch was released at is on there someplace in a technical bulletin Thumbs Up
