Bluetooth install

First off i know this topic has been covered to death, but something still remains unclear... all advice most welcome.

I have a 2005 HSE, it has the voice command button (and the wonderfully annoying women (not the wife) that doesn't understand any commands) so I assume it has a mic, but it does not have the phone green or red buttons on the steering wheel.

So, I need bluetooth asap, what kit do I go for?

The ideas so far are;
- install the phone kit VUB501150 and then the nokia bluetooth module (once i find one for sale)
- or fit a parrot system (not a fan of these)
- or remove the radio and fit a third party unit that has bluetooth and loads of other features (I have a brand new third party double din unit available now).

The last option if very interesting as I don't need to purchase anything besides the wiring loom and the surround but I've read that the touch screen satnav is connected to the headunit and won't work without it.

Can someone straighten this out for me and point me to somewhere where I can buy the bits.

Cheers

wouldnt bother with the aftermarket LR kit (VUB501150) its very old / you cant get the bluetooth / very limited functions

why not go for the factory fit bluetooth

you would need

bluetooth module ( d4 one is best and easiest to fit )
most cable to connect to fibre optics ( i do a plug and play lead )
steering wheel buttons

get it enabled ...thats it

oh ...if you remove the factory radio ...a lot more than the screen will stop working ...including the amp / speakers / the settings on the dash board to name a few

Thanks Wiggs,

Amps and things I'm happy to replace but settings being lost sounds like a can of worms you shouldn't open, so i won't.

So where do I go and what do I buy? and cost?
(I spoke to Cartronics the other day who wanted £700 to retrofit... think not)

I'm up and down the country a fair bit and i'm happy to travel if someone has the parts and knows what they are doing.

I did the Parrot thing and decided within the first day it wasn't for me (too much clutter on the dash). The D4 Bluetooth is completely transparent.

If Voice Control can't understand your commands then there's a possibility that your mic cable has broken (as they do).

Parts Required - budget for about £350.

Land Rover parts
There’s a possibility that some of these part numbers have been superseded. Always best to check with Nick (PM “The Large One” on DISCO3.CO.UK) at Yeovil Land Rover Parts Department what the latest part number is. Nick is on holiday at the moment but is back towards the end of the month.

1 x LR025842 - Discovery 4 Bluetooth Module
1 x XPD500510WVH - Steering wheel switches with red/green phone buttons
1 x XVC000050 - Microphone (a RRS part but fits the D3 perfectly)

Other parts/components

Automotive speaker cable*
Automotive 5A cable (Red)
Automotive 5A cable (Black)
MOST Cable (from Wiggs)
Automotive Earth Stud 6mm Ring Connector
Bullet connectors
Heatshrink tubing
2 pin connector
* Only needed if the existing microphone cable between the interior light cluster and the back of the head unit is broken (most likely)

Tools required

Torx T20 Screwdriver/Screwdriver Bit
Wire Cutters
Crimping Tool
10mm Socket/Spanner
Soldering iron & solder
Long-nosed pliers
Airbag removal tool (I recommend the one that DISCO3.CO.UK member “Hess” sells)
Small electrical screwdriver

The only slightly awkward bit is cutting a slot out of your steering wheel cowling for the red/green telephone switches. I used a Dremel tool to do mine. The rest is easy. You will also need your microphone and Bluetooth enabling by somebody who has a Faultmate. Wiggs, Geoff., Flack and Bodsy can all do this, depending on where in the country you are.

Hi Steve,
top response from you both, many thanks.

The voice instructions is more likely to be my fault, I doubt LR will recognise "for f'k sake shut up women" after I hit the button by mistake.

£350 is what I was expecting plus a fitting cost.

Ideally I'd like to give the car + £xx to someone and let them get on with it.

Would LR do this sort of work or anyone here up for it?

I doubt LR would do this for you but might be worth you dropping a PM to Geoff. (that's Geoff. with a dot) who is experienced in fitting and enabling these and has been known to occasionally venture north of the river.

Either way, you're still going to need a MOST cable from Wiggs for it to work. Thumbs Up

I did mine myself and got Geoff. to enable me with his Faultmate MSV2. Having considered all the options, I'm happy that I went with this Bluetooth install. The sound quality is outstanding and is completely transparent in the car. The Parrot kits are nice from the point of view that they allow you to stream music over Bluetooth as well. The LR D4 module is not capable of this.

Cheers,

Steve
