It's a great unit. Thumbs Up
If you text it, it will be the cost of the texts back to you (you can adjust what it notifies you of if it gets too much or too little!)
If you use the IOS or Android app, it will be a very small amount of data.
When you consider that even with tracking on the GPS one uses around 50Mb/month. which really is nothing.
That's why I use a PAYG sim as no need to have a full contract.

At the moment, it cant be used to start the fans in the car, but there is an add on module currently being developed that will be able to start the fans. This will be triggered by this module so no need to change the module, just add it on if you want it later. Thumbs Up

England

I've wired in the remote switch on mine and it works a treat - it also lights up to say its on too (But not when the car controls it, which is fair enough)

As for costs, I've used 34p of credit in about 10days - with tracking turned on. But bearing in mine that I'm on GiffGaff so texts to me from the Altox are free.

If you are worried about data, the module uses around 100 bytes per command or 0.0001 MB
So it's really not very much at all. Thumbs Up

I'll drop you the info.
It's the middle sized Sim. The EE ones I supply fit no problem. But of course use whichever one is best for your area. Thumbs Up

Fitted mine yesterday to my 2010 D4, wired in the rear using the LR remote connector.

Worked a treat first time via text, and now via the App too, thanks for the advice Bodsy Thumbs Up

Car's in for 7 year service today so I'll be using the GPS to track where the car is:)

Quick couple of questions....

What info do they require from you on the website to register?

How often does the device report back data to the website for the GPS tracking?

What information does the unit send back and how often?

I ask as obviously that's potentially a lot of data on who you are, what car you have, where does it live, where does it go, how often, speeds, etc., and it is all data going out of the EU to Russia.

I'm unsure as to Russian data protection law but would certainly want some reassurance prior to purchasing a GPS one.

Q. What info do they require from you on the website to register?
A. Only your Email address and the device number, no other personal data Thumbs Up

Q. How often does the device report back data to the website for the GPS tracking?
A. exact timings, I'll find out, but pretty sure you can adjust how regular the data is updated. I'll confirm.
It's very very low data use, around 50Mb/month

Q. What information does the unit send back and how often?
A. Same as above. But information is gps location/speed data

Comment: I ask as obviously that's potentially a lot of data on who you are, what car you have, where does it live, where does it go, how often, speeds, etc., and it is all data going out of the EU to Russia.
A. Not sure what you can use the data for, but it's only identifiable as a module number and location. No info on the car type (could be a lorry or a skoda!)

Comment: I'm unsure as to Russian data protection law but would certainly want some reassurance prior to purchasing a GPS one.
A. There's no personally identifiable information shared. You'd be surprised where some of your cloud data storage locations are Whistle

But for sure I'll get further information. Thumbs Up

The concerns about GPS data security are valid.
I'm afraid that there can by no magic answer by Bodsy.
You publish your data, somebody else can access it.
It can be very useful (if your car is stolen) or it can be misused.

IMO good way (I do not know whether it's possible with this tool) is to normally have GPS turned off and to have an option to turn it on remotely (via SMS)?
So your daily movement is not recorded but you can see your car location i you want / need to.

Oh, I wouldn't, I do this stuff for a living Whistle Very Happy

Thanks for the swift info Bodsy. My concerns are really based around loose security controls meaning the data would be easily accessible for more nefarious types who maybe would like to know where a number of expensive and desirable land rovers are kept.

I'm sure the company itself is fine, would just like reassurance around data storage and security controls before committing to transmit GPS co ordinates of my every move to Russia.

In 2009 one of my cars were stolen to order and shipped out of the country so I am more sensitive to this than I ever used to be.

A nice way to do it would be to have the device report back GPS only between 00:00 and 06:00 for example
