More black smoke

Hi Guys and Gals,

I have a MY05 D3 TDV6 HSE and under heavy throttle or load - such as going up hill on boost, it chucks out loads of black smoke.

I was in command shift earlier today going up a hill in 3rd gear and, the harder I accelerated, the less power I seemed to have (inc lots more black smoke)

Does this sound like the turbo hose? I have blanked the EGR's already..

I look toward to any advice or suggestions

It does sound like a leak from a hose or intercooler. Were you tempted to look under the bonnet at all?

Do it with the engine running and squeeze the hoses to check for splits as they are not always obvious. Don't forget to check the clamps too as the oil degrades the hoses at the ends and the clamps become loose. Look for patches on the intercooler too if no joy looking at hoses.

Well I have had a look and found a massive split in the hose from the butterfly housing down to the intercooler.

Replacment should be here this afternoon and my friendly local garage is going to fit it.

It looks to be a right Censored to get to the bottom of the house off the intercooler.

There is a cunningly designed access panel in the wheel arch. You don't even need to take the wheel off.

Put it in offroad height, turn the steering wheel so you can see the inside of the wheel arch, undo the panel screws and there it is.

If you have a screwdriver and know which end to hold it at you will be fine! It will take longer to drive to the garage I suspect.

I did mine last night, not in the rain but without even turning the steering wheel. With the car set into off-road mode to lift it up, it is dead easy to access the plastic splash guard. There are 4, two-part plastic clips that hold it to the car - you need a flat screwdriver to lever out the middle bit first, then the outer bit and then the guard will easily pull away. It's then dead easy to undo the bottom hose clip, just be ready for some oil that may have collected in the bottom to run out!

It looks like this once you've removed the guard:


Once both top and bottom clips are undone, it's dead easy to pull the hose up and out of the engine bay, then simply reverse the process to fit the new one.

Yep, someone though about access to the part when the car was designed. Pretty sure he was taken out and shot afterwards for breaking the 'code'.

Oh and as said already, the oil in the hose is normal - honest.

Anyway, I hope you find diagnosing and fixing it yourself rather satisfying.

Ok, that's been a very interesting experience. I have only had the car for 3 weeks and it has been smoking bad ever since I had it.

I naively thought that it might just be to deposits and needed a good thrashing to clean it out. How wrong was I.

Upon changing the hose (so simple it's untrue) I took the car out for a drive.

It is a totally different beast now. It seems to have found another 100 horsepower and the torque feels like it will spin the earth on its axis. I am totally amazed at this car and it's engine now and I was happy before.

Thank you all for your help, I am like a kid at Christmas now, can't stop using the loud pedal Very Happy
