Bonnet doesn't shut properly |
|
My D3 seems to have a dodgy left-hand lock (as seen from the driving seat) for my bonnet. When I shut the bonnet with a - normal - force, it looks as if though the bonnet has closed properly, but at a speed of 100kph it starts flapping about.
To really close it, I have to bang it down, but I don't think this is how it is supposed to be done. It makes enough noise to make people nearby look around.
This happens when my dealer closes the bonnet, so I am wondering if the lock is defective on my car.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Is this a common issue, and is this something a warranty can cover? If so I have just few weeks left to claim it.
Any advice appreciated!

mine's the same, i believe it's a common issue, i sprayed the lock with some wd40 and it's solved it,
i think there is a more permanent solution that someone will no doubt harp up with in a moment.. one wife.......livid

Hand on the 'L' (of Land), hand on the last 'R' (of Rover) and push the bonnet down evenly

Same here. Same side as well. Twice I have been cruising along the motorway to see the left corner of bonnet rumble away. On one occasion it was from a trip back from the dealers. It seems they don't know how to properly shut the bonnet either. . Club newbie

Me too, same side etc. I tried WD40 and also spray grease, but neither helped. I just give it a good slam. Would be interested to know if anyone has resolved it though? D3 HSE MY05 Auto

mine did this when I bought it. luckily I have a mechanic neighbour who saw me trying to realign the catches, he spent several hours playing, getting them spot on. He did loads of measuring (he's an old time perfectionist) and found a lack of symmetry (only a few mm) in the positioning of the metal loops that locate in the catches. I'd assume the bonnets are made on a jig and the jigs out a tad
The RHS catch needed some adjustment, I seem to remember lifting it up and twisting anticlockwise so the jaws were tilted - took several attempts to get right though.

Always worth trying to adjust the rubber bump stops on the bonnet first. If they are too far out the bonnet will not be able to latch properley. Try screwing the stop in slightly on the offending side.

My dealer has a "you didn't do the PDI properly" list to sort out - the nearside bonnet catch is on the list as it decided to flop around on the first journey from pickup.
If it's such a common problem, why don't the stealers know about it and 'persuade' the bonnet to shut properly?

Thanks everyone!
So it seems I am not the only one - I will follow B16 KJR's advice (thank you) before going to the dealers for my last free checkup.
It looked a little scary watching it flap like a wet leaf (ok, that's a little OTT) when driving at 100kph.
