Brake fluid leak

Just when you think you've done a good deed, Land Rover's have to punish you!

Just finished all the engine servicing (belt, oil pump, water pump etc.) and I notice some spots on my new block paving (grr) so I worry that it's leaking somewhere from what I've done.

No, we're all good up front. It appears I have a major brake fluid leak dripping from the left hand exhaust at the rear.

So I guess that's this weekend's plans decided pretty much.

I presume it's one of the steel brake pipes corroded and not the flexis - are they easy to inspect?

Anyone got any tips on removing brake fluid stains from block paving?

Don't know how to get brake fluid off block paving but the leak is almost certainly the steel brake pipe - cut in a new section in copper from where the heat shield is for the exhaust centre box.
I've done this on each D3 I've owned and now takes me under an hour, even on the driveway, although a decent tool is needed to flare the steel pipe under the car.

Well I must be getting old. I've just dropped it off at my mates garage through sheer lack of time!

Fingers crossed it won't be too expensive!

Scratch that - they've just told me it'll be near £300 so I'll be doing it myself it looks like.

I have flaring tools and pipe so can do that but any tips??? Does it have to route in the same place as the original?

You need to couple two new pipe lengths to the left/right wheels, two hoses (the ferrules rot away) and two more pipes from the hoses to the calipers. AF supplied the bits for me.

Get some spare pipe clips!

Not sure if this is the best way of doing it, but I took the exhaust off the hangers (exhaust hanger 'pliers' are a great invention as trying to get them off without them was the longest task the first time I did it) dropped the exhaust a bit, took off the shields above the exhaust centre section and cut the pipes, slightly offset so the pipe fittings don't sit next to each other.
Routing didn't seem too bad. More tricky on the newer D3 HSE I have because of the rear air-con pipes that the brake pipes seem to almost wrap around.

Remember to put a spreader clamp or otherwise to push the brake pedal so only a small amount of fluid is lost.

I used this type of tool, which is easy to use under the car and made a good flare on the original pipes as well as copper:

Job done!

Took about 90 mins all in. Cut the old just next to the centre box and then routed up and over to the OS wheel. I know what you mean about the aircon pipes... I very nearly admitted defeat and routed the pipe over the air con instead of the old route but got there in the end.

That tool looks like it would be far easier than mine in the tiny gap between he chassis and exhaust!

I imagine on a ramp instead of lying on your back under dripping brake fluid it would be a piece of cake!

Thanks again for the tips

Well done!

I have 2 of the exact same brake tools as I mislaid the first one when I needed to get the second set of lines done. They only do the one size of pipe but it's a very nice tool to use, especially in a confined space.

Anyway c.£270 saved...good job! Very Happy
