Brake pad wear = advice before I take on stealer

My 2012 D4 is going in for its MOT tomorrow at the stealer I bought it from and I am expecting the stealer to tell me my pads need replacing.

I had new pads fitted last year pre MOT by them but on servicing the car in August they told me my pad wear on the front was amber and 50% worn. At that stage the car had done only 6k miles since fitting and has now only done 9.5k on the pads fitted last year

Am I right in arguing with them that a set of pads should last a lot more that 9.5k miles and more like 20k is a reasonable wear rate

I get around 28k miles out of mine.

Also, in D4s it seems to be the norm that the rear pads go before the front ones - in my case the nearside rear was first to go each time.

I bought my MY12 D4 in Sept 2015, 36k miles I think. Not sure if pads had been changed before I got it, but changed my pads a month or two ago at 49k. That was because two separate stealers had highlighted they needed replacement - with vastly different depth figures! They were getting low, so did them myself.

I was told at a dealer that my pads were 90% worn, when I checked they had 6mm which is 70% worm . I did accuse them of just trying to drum up business, which of course they denied, and then tried to wriggle out by saying its only a visual check and they ere on the cautious side ( for them !)

Rough rule of thumb with brake pads is the first half will wear slower than the second half.

Just ask them to provide you with an actual measurement in millimetres rather than a percentage which will most likely be guesstimated, they may have to remove the wheels though and with the wheels off you are only two bolts off of fitting new pads!
They are std brakes like any normal car so any normal garage will be able to fit them no problems much cheaper.

I have got 28k on my fronts, about 1/2 worn, backs were down to about 3mm so I replaced - drove to dealers for service (so 14 miles), their info was that my backs were 20% worn - grade 1 muppets!!

With the last Disco, rears were changed after the dealer advised it at the second service, fronts at the third, I changed both front and rears myself, but I could have delayed the fronts a lot longer.

If you get a torch you can have a look with the wheel on at the outer pads.
I think they start with 12mm so will give you an idea.
There are also quite a few brake pad thickness measuring tools you can buy which allow for the backing plate and give you an accurate reading even with the wheel on.
It doesn’t allow you to check the inner pads but they should be similar if the brakes are working properly.
On my D4 at 28k the front pads are half worn and the rear a bit more.
I always measure the tyre and pads depths before the car goes in to the dealer.
It makes for an interesting chat with the dealer when they phone up with spurious information.
 D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.
D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.
I only work so I can afford to repair my Land Rovers!

Huge difference depending on the owners driving style.

I drive letting the gears do most of the work and am very light on the brakes. It is amazing how efficient they are given a very light touch especially the V8/Brembos...

30-40,000 miles should be achievable driven normally but change before they get too thin...

I think that 10k miles of town driving would cause more brake wear than 10k miles of motorway driving. Therefore, how many miles you get out of a set of pads should only be a very rough guide. Only the person who has driven the miles will know how much the brakes have been used and therefore what the wear rate ought to be. Thumbs Up

I'm on 45k from new and still no sign of my pads wearing out. Most of that is motorways though with plenty of country roads with sharp bends. Given the number of tail-gating drivers I see who are constantly on the brakes three metres behind the car in front in the outside lane, I can see how some people do get through them in under 30k...

Easiest way to judge a drivers style is to look at the amount of brake dust on the front wheels, others may call it pollution, I call it bad driving.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks to all for the replies

As an update the D4 passed its MOT today with no advisories so I am assuming that the comments made by the stealer at the last service about worn pads and slight corrosion of rear brake pipes were an attempt at a money making exercise
