Replaced a rear Panhard/Tie rod with pics

Hi,
I changed the N/S rear Panhard or Tie rod today as Amber noted at last service by dealer "play in inner ball joint" it was a straight forward job

Jack up the car and make safe, I just leant it against the caravan Thumbs Up

I also put an axel stand at the rear as well

With the wheel still on, hold at 3 & 9 O'clock and check for any movement, I could feel slight play/knocking confirming the inner ball joint Sad same at 12 & 6 and nothing felt

I had a trolley jack under the lower arm and a bottle jack under the chassis incase any adjustment was going to be needed to refit the rod, but this was not needed as there is no load on the rod Rolling Eyes

New parts from AF

the bolt is 18mm and the nut is 21mm both new.

I took this pic before removing the old arm and Murphy's law the bolt actually fits the other way around
with the metal inner bush fitting into a recess

My arm had been previously fitted high in the chassis bracket slot Question

The gap should be 10mm from the bottom of the ball joint to the bottom of the bracket
(measured on the other side)
Thanks to SteveNorman for that info Thumbs Up

I had intended to set the length of the New rod to the same as the old, but as I was now going to set the new rod at the 10mm gap at the chassis mounting bracket I measured from this bracket to the brake caliper 540mm

Moving the ball joint end down to the 10mm gap made a +3mm difference to the measurement which I would think would add a fair bit of extra rear toe in Exclamation

I tightened the nut on the ball joint/chassis end first so the square fits into the slot of the bracket more easily, then the bolt through the bush end.
Adjusted the bar back to the 540mm
The lock nut is 26mm and the bar needs a 17mm to make adjustment

Put everything away and put the kettle on,
think it should only be a 30-40 min job, so the photos must have took the other hour Whistle

Just got to get the wheel alignment done now UPDATE n/s I replaced all good for toe but camber a bit out and the o/s way out for camber ! All correct now Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up

You have replaced the entire panhard rod / toe link.

Can the bush be replaced alone and if so, what is the part no.?

Hi,
I never asked Question

it was the inner ball joint that was cream cracked on mine
and from memory the £ of the complete unit would not have been worth the time or effort for me

Thumbs Up
