Brake pedal goes all the way to the floor (!)
ok....very scary moment the other day.
Had to stamp on brakes hard due to twit pulling out in front of me.
As I pushed harder and harder I very soon realised that the pedal was on the floor and there was no more braking effort to be had. Thankfully it was enough and I avoided the crunch....just. Got home...first job...new pair of underpants
The first suspect in such a problem is of course air in the brakelines. I've bleeded them twice (no signs of air). Taking the car to a quiet road near by, I can recreate the problem every time. Basically progressive hard braking , pedal hits the floor. No ABS, NO locked wheels, and no where near the braking effort I would expect.
There's no sign of fluid leaking and no sign of air in the system. Pads and discs all have plenty of life in them
Can anyone think what else it could be ?
...and as s***ds law would have it...warranty ran out last month.

When was the fluid last changed? Modern fluid is very hyroscopic and it could be its got water in it which effectively boils when you brake hard and you are then compressing a gas, which would make you brakes not work.
If you stamp on them very quickly and hard is it the same? Ie not progressive as that gives the fluid time to heat up.Mark.

failed seals in the master cylinder give a similar effect. Fluid was changed about 6 months ago. Doesnt look contaminated (well in any obvious way) nor discoloured.
Is there any way to confirm its the master cylinder ?
On dual circuit brakes, would the circuit that was fully functionally not at least tried to lock the 2 diagonal wheels (subject of course to ABS) it acted upon ?

Its a AIR VACCUM pipe, shake it, and if there is any oil present like mine was, its the failure of the VAC PACK seal, meaning a fluid change, pipe change/clean, Servo replacement, and Vac Pump replacement.
It is a known fault, and your symptoms can be this, get it checked out as soon as possible with LR, to drive too far if you have this issue with a 3t motor is'nt advisable really

Martin, as it seems you may have your finger on the pulse here. One question, mine as stated had the VacPac etc etc etc done, I did'nt receive a recall, so would that mean cos of the NEW parts its deemed all ok..

Mac, not at all. I didn't receive a recall for the brake recall. I ended up calling LRCC about something else and asked. It seems that the system they were using was a registration number recognition. As I've changed my plates my veh became invisible to them. Or so they told me. I was informed to just call up my normal dealer to book it in. Which I did and all is well for now.HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

I would presume yours is similar to mine and is BEFORE the first VIN of the recall notice (367110)?
If you've had all the parts fitted and work carried out as per P017 then you've effectively had the recall done.
The recall procedure doesn't change the entire vacuum pump, only the inlet valve spring and spigot - but I would presume that your new pump had any modified parts already fitted (when was it done?)06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

thanks all - I'll check for oil in the pipe tomorrow.
I've not had any recall letter from LR but I know the previous owner had a private plate so maybe it dropped off LR's radar.
I would have assumed the dealer would have pointed it out the last time my car went in for a service if my car was in the recall group.
If the work does need doing, given my warranty ran out, will it cost me ?

It's possible that the recall and non-recall procedures for the issue are different, however I can only go on what's in the P017 bulletin.

If its the seals and subsequent oil in the vacuum pipe, would'nt the brake pedal go 'hard' as there is no servo ? rather than going to the floor, mine did this a couple of times but hasn't done it since. I had the system checked out by the stealers and they said it was okay. My vin didn't fall within the recall range.
