Breakdown

Going down a dual carriageway at 70mph when all of a sudden the car starts to vibrate badly. Pull into inside lane and slow down, vibration goes but as soon as I accelerate above 50mph its back with a vengeance coupled with a burning smell. Pull into a layby and call LRA out, say they will be there in 40 minutes but he turns up in less than 10 Smile . Looks around the car and finds the offside rear wheel disc is really hot and the burning smell is strongest at that wheel (smell in cabin and engine bay by now). Diagnosis is that the handbrake has stuck on Shocked as there is also a screeching sound if the car is moved. He told me to drive it to the dealership slowly (as it's only a mile away) and he will follow me there and take me home.

A couple of questions though that hopefully someone will be able to advise me.

Should the dealer replace the handbrake shoes when they fix it as the burning smell obviously means they have overheated and will that have caused any problem with my rear disc brakes?

Park brake shoes and rear discs should be changed, probably both sides too as it's not good practice (or neccasarily safe) to change one brake disc, you should also get a set of rear brake pads changed for free Very Happy

Thanks for that 10, I will make sure that they have done that when I get to pick the car up. Might not get it back until after Thursday as it was booked in on that day for a squealing park brake amongst other things
