Brexit: Ministers suffer first defeat on EU Withdrawal Bill

Peers have defeated the government on the issue of the UK staying in a customs union after Brexit.

The House of Lords voted by 348 to 225 in favour of a plan requiring ministers to report on steps to negotiate a continued EU-UK customs union.

More space now for British nurses (or Jamaican)

Quote:
Just 800 EU nurses came to the UK last year, compared to 6,382 in 2016/17 and 9,389 in the year of the Brexit vote. Nearly 4,000 nurses left last year.

Nursing representatives said there was a “faint glimmer of hope” in the increase of UK nurse numbers – but that in the context of an exodus of EU and UK staff, and a drop in UK students, “the future looks bleak”.

There were 690,278 nurses and midwives registered in the UK at March 2018, a decrease of 495 on the previous year. This comes at a time when the NHS is pulling out all the stops to recruit staff for 40,000 vacant posts.

This week the Department of Health and Social Care announced a deal with the Jamaican government inviting nurses to the UK to do NHS placements, in order to increase the workforce by 5,500 staff.

Meanwhile, a government plan to boost the number of trainee nurses by replacing NHS-funded bursaries with £9,000 a year fees and loans has caused a drop of 700 students last year.

So it now looks as if the UK as a whole is looking at the option of staying in the Customs Union for years to come. Bar a hard border it’s the only workable option currently. I am starting to feel sorry for Theresa May, she is jammed between a Rock and a hard place.

Let's hope we leave the EU and Freedom of Movement asap so we can (politically) free up the restriction on people who should be welcome to come and work in the UK.

Ah yes, the silly system put in place to keep the snarling backbench xenophobes in her party happy.

One wonders what good will be left in the UK after these 30 or so millionaires get their way. Sad

Hopefully we will have more clarity soon regarding UK position
Quote:

Brexit: UK promises 'significant' White Paper

The government says a White Paper setting out its Brexit position will be its "most significant publication on the EU" since the 2016 referendum.

It will include "detailed, ambitious and precise explanations of our positions", Brexit Secretary David Davis told colleagues.

I didn't think the Tier 1 quota was full.
The Tier 2 only needs a £35k salary...hardly the brightest and best, surely? Wink
If they earn £150k+ the cap doesn't apply.

Don't know what our non-EU visa quotas have to do with Brexit, but hey, let's abolish them... Thumbs Up

The worst policies and mistakes always happen, on both sides, when policies are implemented on the basis of straw men. All too often party leaderships/moderates/bureaucrats get the wrong and of the stick and thus produce a policy that represents the worst interpretation of the ideas they're trying to apply. Because they don't actually believe in it, they are inattentive to the problems they see with it - as far as they're concerned, it's just an act of appeasement, a publicity stunt; they are doing something they think is wrong anyway so they accept all sorts of flaws regardless - and we end up with a damaging policy that absolutely nobody wanted.

It's not snarling backbench xenophobes you want to watch out for, it's the gratuitous wrath of the wet-Tory leaderships...

They had to lock the non-EU nurses out else the Remainers wouldn't be able to show figures that we need to be in the EU to fill the places. Wink
