A brief encounter with my new discovery !
Hi all..I saw the thread disco diary and had to jump in there.
purchased my disco last week after alot of "jesus!..can we really afford it..b*ll*X i deserve one talk".
On the way home..2 miles from dealer ..safe mode..etc.
Stinking call and bit of a rant at dealer the next morning (everything in writing)..he wants the car back asap to be collected on loader to see his "mechanic" who owns a land rover and has a machine to fix it!
While waiting for courtessy car (saab 93 btw fs!) to be delivered and me new motor to be picked up i runs it down to kings langley lr from a quick dianose (good bloke down there very helpful).
Comes back at me with 47 faults !
Largest fault a new turbo charge need..possible erg valves.
It now sits in wimbledon awaiting work..dealer is footing the bill i'm told.
I've got a mini cab that resembles a steam iron sitting on me drive.
I'm not here to slag off the disco..dont get me wrong but have i purchased a dog?
I'm told by wimbledon turbo is a common fault?
erg 's can be blanked off?
this dealer advertises all cars sold come with full inspection..obviously not the case.47 faults!
Should i try and back it..confidence is in bits with the car.
Have a land briuser for the last 9 yrs ..no bother.
This site has been a god send for info in helping me out ..thanks to everyone who posts..i hope to be a happy owner in the near future : ]
regards
kerbie

47 faults can happen easily. If One system flags a fault then anything associated with that system will also flag a fault......and so on.
Turbo is a achilles heel of a D3 thats been looked after, I have had a new Turbo too. Its a fault with the Variable Vanes that open and close with the turbo demand, if the D3 has been mollycoddled the vanes clog with soot and hence the failure.
Its a great vehicle, stick with it and you'll be impressed....
As for servicing and additions, go for the forum favourite 10forCash, miles better than dealers for repairs and servicing.

Wasn't there a software upgrade to "excercise" the turbo vanes, seem to remember Disco Mikey mentioning it a while back.

It bloody can't
47 is a huge number of faults to be stored....
I've seen 15-20 or so when trying to start the car with things disconnected, but the vast majority of these are "untested" faults and are self-cleared once certain conditions are met (e.g. 3 "clean" start-ups etc etc)...
47 logged faults seems far too many to account for a few inter-module comms issues.
kerbie - do you have a copy of the fault codes by any chance? It seems strange that both the EGRs and the turbo would actually fail at the same time 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Dealer not private purchase?? Thought under sale of goods legislation any faults that crop up in 6 months are deemed to be there at the time of purchase and his responsibility! Turbo could have gone and been last straw for previous owner, EGRs could have failed ages ago and owner put up with it. Sounds like you are having to rectify all the usual faults that crop up over the first few years. These aren't the most reliable of cars and if you don't keep on top if the problems they just snowball.

Thanks for the response..
i'm told by kingslangley lr that there is in the region of 20 odd cpu onboard the disco3..and the turbo charge fault could well have caused the other 46 faults..i will soon know i suppose.
The guy at kllr did write down the fault codes before it went to wimbledon lr and got all the codes cleared b4 a test drive . they were
p132b / p115a / p138e / p115b / p040 / p1328 / poo46 etc..just the main ones the guy said he wrote down.
Annoying that wimbledon cleared the faults without logging /recording them because the finance company tells me that i cant really refuse the car if it comes back with the initial fault fixed! (the only one showing after the test drive was the faulty turbo). you can see the concern).
Its now taking a possible 2 weeks to get the turbo from lr...its ok the dealer has kindly taken back the saab and given me a honda crv in its place..now he'll deffo be getting a christmas card !!!!
I called lookers lr to see if the lead time on turbo was a take of the michael and they asked me if i was looking for a new or recon turbo..long story short its a recon lr turbo being fitted to the car..they tell me even if i wanted a new turbo..i couldnt have one..u can only get a recon from lr??...this true?..please advise.

When my Turbo went, mine was pinched from the production line, but that still took 3 months , 3 weeks is great.
As for a Recon unit, thats not a problem. Its not actually the turbo thats at fault, its the Variable Vane pack that jams open or closed causing the problem. So a Recon is normally okay and the Vane pack replaced. Once the LR dealer has rectified, ensure the latest software is installed (which is likely), cos a while back LR introduced a programme to the start up sequence that fully exercises the vanes on the open/close.
And when you get it back, give it a booting once and a while, that keeps soot on the vanes at bay

Might I ask if by LR Wimbledon you mean the indie outfit in Bushey Road opposite David Lloyd?

Not as yet but they seem to have a good name in these psrts. They also price considerably lower than Guy Salmon Thames Ditton, the nearest official dealership.

If you intend to take it off the black stuff forget side steps, they either get damaged, ripped off or at best get you stuck.
