Yes there are 3.0 D4 without DPF in the UK. Predominantly 2010. I've got one.

Relieved to have read this thread.
Occasionally my 2015 D4 exhaust sound changes to a slightly gruff sound, almost as though the exhaust is blowing accompanied at the same time with a smell like hot singeing rubber from the outside.
Looks like it could be the DPF in regen mode then?......hopefully. 2015 D4 HSE in Corris Grey

According to the VIN decoding thingy, my 2010 one here in South Africa doesn't have a DPF either.

Got a mate with a 4 year old Jag XF showing 40k miles. His DPF went pop and has just had it replaced at a main dealer with not much change out of £3k
He's got more money than sense and you could probably get it done cheaper, but seems like another big bill looms as D4's get older Discovery 4 HSE

Always playing things on the safe side, spoke to LR Assist who suggested one of their technicians came out to check it over.
Checked the exhaust system fully and could not find anything close enough to it to produce an acrid smell due to high temps ocurring during regen.
Said he had been called out to many such smell related worries and had never found a problem.
The techy agreed that the smell is a characteristic of the process but was unable to identify a point where the smell externally is generated from.2015 D4 HSE in Corris Grey

I noticed that smell outside the vehicle (2016MY) HSE Lux this week. 3K miles in and pretty strong (burning) smell.
