Burning smell from rear wheel. Faulty caliper maybe?
SWMBO has just been delivered back from her holiday on the back of a recovery truck. Lovely ‘electrical’ burning smell from the passenger side rear wheel and juddering throughout the car.
After having a mooch around the internet and speaking to my local Indy, the general consensus is that it’s probably a sticking caliper. I was worried it might be the EPB but my Indy said that would probably affect both rear wheels and it would be difficult to drive the car if the EPB was stuck on.
I’ve driven it around locally yesterday and the juddering has ceased but that probably only occurs once the break components heat up and swell a bit causing a tighter grip on the disc. No apparent damage to the disc and pads look ok (although a little more worn than the other side) so hopefully there won’t be any residual damage to deal with.
On another note, SWMBO was chatting to the recovery guy (Green Flag) and, contrary to what people say about the Disco 4, he said that it’s one vehicle they see as being very reliable and rarely get called out for
Maybe that’s because they’re all recovered by LR Assist although it’s kind of comforting to hear that they are seen as reliable by the recovery guys. He did say that they are currently recovering around 15 FFRRs a week at the moment as they are notorious for electrical issues

I had exactly the same symptoms, hot off side disc, severe juddering that would come and go when I had driven a few miles.
It was a seized parking brake shoe on the off side. Quite an easy fix but you will probably need new discs and brake shoes, I had most trouble removing the disc due to a wear grove from the shoe sticking on.

Thanks Fireburst. What did you do to fix it? Did you have to adjust the EPB afterwards?

Had the same thing. The parking brake should be cleaned every 80K KM, dealer forgot it to do....

You will need to adjust the new shoes to the disc, very easy to do refer to Bodsy's brake Bible, he has done a brilliant write up.

Cheers Jim. That’s a great guide Bodsy has created. I’ve heard of it before but never actually took the time to look at it. Local Indy can’t fit me in until 8th September but I know a competent mechanic so I’ll give him a shout.
Interesting comment from ds23man. Is this something the dealers should be doing? Can’t see anything in the service schedule. Found an old bulletin online but not sure if it relates to 2013 D4.

The mechanic at my dealer mentioned it after my brake blocked due to build up of rubbish and dust. It's normal to service the brakes at service, including the park brake!

Just had exactly the same symptons on the D3......... was the off side rear caliper sticking. Believe the juddering is from the ABS control.
New caliper fixed the problem.Best Regards,

Just to update everybody as I hate leaving a post in limbo with no resolution.....
There was a load of crud in the drum that had baked itself on to the brake shoe. A good old clean up did the trick. Put new brake pads on as well while it was all in bits as they were getting a bit low. Calipers checked out fine - no problems there.
All in all and cheap fix (for a change)
And Bodsy's Brake Bible helped along the way
