Given that from what I hear the Hitachi and the AMK were both prone to early faillure has anyone tried the cheap Chinese option? It's less than half the price! Feedback is good and there's been 55 sold by this trader alone.

Well I was just reading a post which was complaining about a new AMK that lasted a similar amount of time. I know it's usually the case that you get what you pay for but what the hell maybe they are all made in the same factory but given different badges...it's not unheard of.
The ebay seller is offering 2 year warranty.

I would suggest either a new AMK or see if you can find the piston/cyl assy to rebuild your own. (slightly tricky disassembly process)
Both the Hitachi and AMK compressors are of good quality. The problems arise out of them not receiving any attention/servicing. By the time they do they are often gone to far to refurbish.
Basically a strip down and clean, desiccant and filters change every 2/3 years can see them last a very long time. My own AMK is 10 years old and performs perfect, but has been maintained as per above.
The Hitachi is easier to rebuild and parts are more readily available. I have rebuilt both types and I believe they are all still in service!
The cheap Chinese stuff is a waste of money, I never advocate fitting used parts but personally I'd rather buy a used one from a breakers and refurbish than fit sub standard junk.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Hi.
I'm still getting the 'normal height only' message. But if I'm not bothered about raising the vehicle is it OK just to ignore it?

It wont harm the vehicle, but the fault may require the compressor to work harder, possibly reducing its life further.
You clearly still have either pressure loss during fill cycle, or the comp is no longer capable of meeting the demands required by the ecu.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
