Should I buy or not? Advice needed please.

I have the chance to buy a Discovery 3 off my next door neighbour who has owned it from 6 months old when it had 5k on the clock. It is a 2006 2.7 TDV6 S manual which is currently on 209k & MOT’d until October. Everything on it works apart from top part of tailgate. Other than needing a damn good clean, front discs and a service it’s fine.

He wants £1200 for it however, he’s not kept a great record of maintenance or service history. He’s assured me it’s had a timing belt, air suspension compressor, prop shaft and downpipe (he called it an X pipe?) in recent years. He’s used it for towing (owns a catering business) but in the last year or so it’s just been parked up.

My question is, is it worth the gamble and is it worth £1200?

I have driven it and it does drive fine with just a hint of a grumbling/whirring noise when you lift off throttle.

I’m a complete newbie to Land Rovers but I am quite mechanically minded, so don’t mind getting my hands dirty.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Timing belts need changing every 105k miles or 7 years so may be overdue, not an impossible £250 DIY job. Check for vibration/judder when accelerating uphill at 25-40 mph, sign that the torque converter is on its way out, £3k job that is not DIY. It cost around £45k when new Shocked work that out at today’s values.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Buy it for £1200 but expect to spend another £1200-£2000 on it and you'll have a great car, any less than that and consider it a bonus.. welcome to the wallet emptying club Laughing

I have an E91 335d and the wife has an E70 X5 so I’m very familiar with spending money on my cars Laughing

My thoughts were to tidy it up and sell on for a small profit, but it’s come at the right time as my 335d’s off the road until next month.

What are the costs of a timing belt on these? I’ve seen varying costs online.
