Buying 2nd hand - should I be scared of high mileage? |
|
Hi everyone.
I'm currently shopping around for a D3. I have a healthy but not huge budget. I am upgrading from a tidy Disco 1 so my main motivation is to swap into something that is quieter and more comfy on long journeys. For this reason, I am trying to find an HSE - I want all the bells and whistles to justify getting rid of a perfectly healthy Disco 1.
Here is my question - should I be wary of high mileage cars? I have seen a few at 90 and 100k miles, I plan to do about 8k a year.
Grateful for any input from those of you who have racked up 6-figure mileages!
Cheers!
Guy. SWMBO's - '14 FL2 TD4 XS auto. SOLD.
Dingo - '99 Disco 2 V8 converted to 300 Tdi - chawton white. SOLD.
Sharky - '06 Disco 3 HSE - bonatti grey, with alpaca leather. SOLD.
George - '98 Disco 1 - willow green 300Tdi auto. A fantastic Land Rover. SOLD.
Pingu - '96 Defender 110 CSW - epsom green 300Tdi. Sadly turned out to be a lemon! GONE.

I bought my D3 with 85k on the clock, HSE, and it's been spot on. No drama. So I would suggest it. However don't blame me if you have problems.
I also went from a D1 as the Land Rover is our second car, I am now considering a second D3! D3 HSE MY05 Auto
Expo Rack, Club MTR, LR Spots, A Bar, Light Guards, GNVP Sump Guard, GNVP Ladder, Cup Holders, RLD A Bar brackets. Disco3Club stickers, Aux power on Mod

Forum member Character swears by them and not at them... so they should be good as long as they've been looked after properly.

Having owned a D2 for the last 5 years, and generally had no real problems, buying another Land Rover was an easy choice for me !! (the D2 clocked 185K with no real issues)
So . . . I bought my first D3 last Sept, on a 06 plate, being 3 years old last march. It is teh HSE model with all the bells and whistles you could wish for.
It had 59k when I got it, and has now clocked 77k, it was serviced by a main dealer at 75k, and he reported it was in excellent condition with nothing needing attention.
But I did spend ages looking around, and after looking a few private sales, opted for a dealer vehicle, and managed to talk them in to including 12 months warranty in the price, as well as 2 new front tyres, and a couple of interior trim repairs (previous owners kids I suspect)
I am delighted with it, and it was nothing less of brilliant in the recent snow
Already saving up for my next one (either a newer D3, or maybe a almost new D4 Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k
previous vehicles:
04 D2 TD5 - (clocked 189k from new)
52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

Anything near 105k is probably slightly cheaper then it ought to be because of the 105k service, which is somewhere around £600, but shop around! Loads on here about that. Factor that into your decision if buying vehicles around this mileage.
That said, mine's on 120k and

Exactly how many bells and whistles do you want. Mine has just about everything you can throw onto a D3. She will be up for sale in the next few weeks. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I don't think you'll be alone in that thought
I think Andrew's vehicles probably have more provenance than the G4's
Especially that one - 'tis famous

317k? Blimey! I have my eye on an 05 with 69k on the clock, so I guess it's just about run in! Should I be haggling based on an upcoming service or anything like that? The D3 I plan to buy is for sale at a standard used car garage, rather than a Land Rover dealer. SWMBO's - '14 FL2 TD4 XS auto. SOLD.
Dingo - '99 Disco 2 V8 converted to 300 Tdi - chawton white. SOLD.
Sharky - '06 Disco 3 HSE - bonatti grey, with alpaca leather. SOLD.
George - '98 Disco 1 - willow green 300Tdi auto. A fantastic Land Rover. SOLD.
Pingu - '96 Defender 110 CSW - epsom green 300Tdi. Sadly turned out to be a lemon! GONE.

I got mine at 90k.
Will only advise that you may have bush wear. Ive had to replace the front lower suspension arms ARB's and its going into the garage next week for a steering shaft. Will no doubt be replacing more bushes soon too. Fab car other thant that. You will join the permigrin club, its great Current: D3 commercial
Past: but not forgotten D3 HSE x2, 5 TD5 disco2's, 1 200tdi disco1, 2 300tdi disco1 one of which was a commercial, Off roader with a rather large spec, ARB's and big travel suspension to name a few.
Pajero SWB 2.8 for off road playdays
