buying advice re crank

hi , i am looking to purchase a 2nd hand disco 4.
i have done some research on the crank failures and i wanted to ask advice.
what is the best protocol to stand best chance should the crank go , on say a 8 year old vehicle?

Would it need to be bought for LR official dealer?
would it have to have full LRSH? ( no indis? )
is warranty direct a must and would they cover cost if either / both the above upheld?

Just wanting to ensure i dont make a big mistake.

Thanks in advance . great forum btw. Very Happy

At 8 years old and second hand I suspect it will be down to you if it goes bang - just get a decent warranty.
I’d be more concerned about previous TLC - lots of proof of (preferably) pre-emptive maintenance.

Thanks , I maybe able to stretch to a slightly newer car .

Is there any pre emptive work on the engine that can be done to prevent the crank issue ?

Also was wondering if the crank would be covered by a warranty and if so under what conditions

Crank is not covered by the official LR warranty.

However - if the vehicle has full LRSH then Land Rover will pay directly via a different method.

I am in the same position, looking to buy ASAP - I called the LR warranty company this week, and spoke to a very helpful chap named Jonathan. He told me he has never known them refuse if the vehicle is with LR warranty and has full LRSH.

Hope that helps.

Not really, but checking oil level religiously and frequent oil changes can’t harm - I used to change oil + filter on mine every 6k

I change oil + filter on mine every 6k/6 months which ever comes first. Check oil level frequently & regularly.

Take out WD warranty when LR Approved warranty expires.

Otherwise not much you can do.

It does thanks !
This would suggest it has to be LR warranty then . Can you buy that warranty for a vehicle not bought from an official LR dealer ?

that I don't know, maybe check out : https://landrover-extendedwarranty-extend-...-details-1

and of course take my advice with a pinch of salt, this is unfortunatley (and I think deliberately on the part of LR) not written down anywhere - but it is what I was told.

I am buying from a dealer, I know I could have found cheaper from a trader or private but I considered the risk too high.

Good luck!

I had heard LR might make a contribution.
Was the advice that with a full LR service history they would pay/contribute the whole cost of labour and parts?

didn't specifically ask that question - my feeling was if I had that the answer would have been each case is considered independently, dependent on service history etc etc

Land Rover extended warranties have to follow on from the original Land Rover warranty when new or the previous extended warranty that stretches back originally to the new warranty. If it lapses, that's it. The clue is in the name; "extended". Although you can keep it going for 100,000 miles.

I was in the same position. Wanted a D4 after the D3 went pop. But I just couldn’t take the risk (however slight the chances) and went with another manufacture that offered the same / similar requirements. Also I have 7 year warranty. Big part of the decision for me is that I didn’t want to be tied into the JLR servicing prices and parts for a car that could end up worthless should the crank go. I also wouldn’t ever have been relaxed driving it, especially after the D3 let me down. Each to their own, am sure there are thousands and thousands of D4’s ticking along without any problems. Lastly when I did look for an approved used D4 it was very hit and miss. Some had missed services or the service schedules were all over the shop.

Not going to be too long until a blown engine isn’t covered due to the “beyond economical repair” clauses in aftermarket warranty small print.

Re LR always covering if FLRSH, good luck with that. If I was looking to get a D4 and warranty combo, the only one at the mo I’d even think about is WD. LR goodwill is too much of a gamble and LR extended warranty is a joke re the most expensive bit on the car. Just be aware that just coz someone from CCP says LR will always stump up doesn’t hold for squat when push comes to shove. Thumbs Up
