Buying advice - transfer case oil leak?
Hi guys,
Looking at getting into a D4, and saw a really nice example today just down the road from home.
MY12 61 plate XS, 72k.
Everything seemed clean underneath with the significant exception of what I think is the transfer box?
This was quite oilly with a couple of obvious 'drips', fluid colour was light brown.
Attached are a couple of photos. Last one looks like some sort of plug which was especially oilly.
Trying to work out if this is a major or minor issue, car is keenly priced otherwise, but would be good to know what I might be into if this does need fixing... what do people think?
Thanks for the help!

I have had issues with oil leaks from transfer case on both cars first one was typical seal between castings and on second one i was suspecting the same issue but that found most bolts holding case halves were not torqued at all to specs and since torquing them all nicely oil leak stopped. there is occasional tiny sweating but nothing visible.
So might be a job costing you round 500 plus quid or simple tightening of bolts.
So mention this to seller to rectify before sell as major issue.
The plug you see is TC oil drain plug which should not leak unless very loose or threads damaged.
Also if I am correct looking at your first shot it seems to indicate the casing is also oily higher on the side of rear prop or it just might be spash while driving the car moving oil toward the back of the case.

Mine had a leak when I bought it. As I was doing all the oils I drained and refilled the box and its been fine ever since. I can only assume it was overfilled.

Brown oil does not sound good.

Thanks All,
I've let the seller know what it seems to be, and said it needs to be checked, fixed and signed off by the garage before we go any further.
