Buying etiquette - OBD-II Reader :D

Hey folks,

So as i'm in the market for an older Discovery 4 (2010 ish) I was curious on what peoples thoughts are on taking an OBD-II reader along with you and politely asking if you can plug it in.

It certainly gives you a better idea of what might be going on with the car. I know the codes could have all been cleared but if a 2010 car shows no errors thats actually probably a bigger red flag than most Smile.

I think its a great idea - plug it in, clear codes and see if anything new crops up on the test-drive - all buttons pressed etc

historic ones might be a potential red herring .....

I would suggest nothing wrong in plugging in a code reader.

If the seller objects then you know something is wrong and walk away.

Standard practice nowadays, a refusal would raise concern. Thumbs Up

I did it with a couple of D3's I test drove.
Didn't even test drive (or even start the engine!) on the D4 i did end up purchasing!

If I were a seller, my only concern with someone fiddling with the ODB port would be that they could be trying to code another key so that they can come back later and just drive off with the car.

I’d be cool with plugging it in and reading the codes but I’d stay away from clearing. Why? Well, the next guy looking at the vehicle won’t have the same info as you just got. Mr. Green

I probably wouldn’t buy one without reading the codes now. Also helpful that you can read how long / far it’s been used in the off road Modes to get an idea if it’s been a Chelsea tractor or just a tractor in its life
