Calais - Strasbourg - Andermatt - Lake Como |
|
I am planning a trip next summer to Lake Como, in Italy. Looking at leaving Calais in the morning, overnighting around Strasbourg, through Switzerland to Lake Como the next day.
Has anyone got any pre-long trip recommendations, or lunch venues along the route, recommendation for somewhere to stay around Strasbourg, or a gentle off-road route around Lake Como?
Budget's not too tight as the in-laws are coming with us!
Thanks

Did this trip a couple of years ago but we stopped in Beaune, just south of Dijon to break the driving up. From there travelled down to Interlaaken, Switzerland. Can recommend both places if thats any use. Club Exped trailer

Recommend stopping near Luxemborg - cheap fuel and very good food, plus you might be able to arrange a meeting with some of the Luxembourg D3 members. I did this on the way down to my sister near Basel last month
I took the A and B roads from Strassen in Lux down to Basel and went throught some very beautiful scenary, would have been even better if we'd overnighted in Strassen and then driven down during the day instead of pushing on from Strassen in the evening
Interestingly, drving that route to Basel meant only an extra 15 minutes journey time, excluding our stop for food with the Disco3 boys, but because we went the scenic way after Strassen we didn't pay one French motorway toll on the way down to Basel, where are taking the direct motorway route on the way back we were 15minutes faster but paid 46Euros in tolls

Couple of recommendation for Strasbourg restaurants:
Maison Kammersell - traditional restaurant for the region, and was recommended to me as the best place to go for local cuisine. Is also right next to the Cathedral which is an amazing site, even at night. Very traditional inside, but good food.
Restaurant Au Pont Corbaeu - a very good quality local(s) restaurant, run by a very proud/traditional owner. Even though I didn't speak much French the banter we had with the owner was great. The wine is fantastic, some of the best I've tasted especially the Alsace wines, one of my favourite since going here has to be Gewurztraminer and great food.
If you go out for a walk round the centre of Strasbourg (i.e. on the island), take a map with you, all the bridges and streets can start to look the same especially after a few beers/glasses of wine..... only took me 2 hours to get back to hotel once
Hope this helps,
