I will not do the belts on the early ones unless they have the pump changed now, as there are to many of the older ones beginning to fail, its just not worth it.

So,

My MY05 with 87k on the clock, and dealer serviced/replaced belts in 2012.

Not by me; only got her 8 weeks ago.

Was planning belt replacement next year, but am I being ambitious?

Hi Just checking on this one as have spoken to a 4x4 specialist and he tells me that you don't need water pumps changed at same time as belts as they are completely separate on these vehicles? Correct or not, sounded knowledgeable

Not necessary to change water pump but for what they cost, you may as well.

Most of the cost of a belt change is in the time/labour so if a water pump fails, then you have almost the same amount of labour to access it so while the front of the car is stripped. may as well change while you can easily get at it.

Good practice would be to change the oil/water pump at every belt change as the car would appreciate increased oil and water flow that you get from a new pumps.

Just my opinion so don't shoot me down.

Thanks
Having whole lot done with someone who knows what they are doing for £885 for the lot. I assume that's quite good.

There are 3 belts. Timing, Auxilliary drive, and hp fuel pump drive. Auxilliary belt is the front of the engine, and runs off the crank pulley, driving the alternator, water pump, power steering, aircon and cooling fan.

Your probably confusing the aux belt with the timing belt change. But as you have to remove the aux belt to change the timing belt, you may as well change the water pump. I don’t think it’s expensive.

Make sure all the bolts are in the water pump after a belt change, because I’ve read stories about a bolt getting missed and the pump falling off!

PO of mine had the water pump fall off after belt change, water pump bolt undone in error as close to timing belt cover bolt

I've been looking around, but can't find.

Was there ever a TSB relating to the oil pump?

No tsb, or Ssm, or any recognition or explanation as to why the design was changed from LR.

Cam Belt and Oil Pump Change

I am having the oil pump changed but have researched everywhere and i cant find one example of an 05 failing on the oil pump as the recall was for later models. Its not unusual for a car manufacturer to be offered a cheaper part and then change it, so that could have easily happened from 05 to 07 where the issue begins. So who has an 05 that had oil pump casing failure?

Windermere you say "the oil pump ...recall was for later models".

Could you post a copy of the recall or a link to it please?

as I understand it LR deny there's a problem with the pumps so there won't ever have been a recall?
