D3 and MY2010-2013 D4 has better high beam because they has Bi-xenon (dipped and high) plus the H7 bulb high beam:
MY2010-2013: Dipped: main xenon D3S (partial beam by pattern shutter)
High: main xenon D3S (full beam, shutter open) + H7 55W

MY2014-2017: Dipped: main xenon D3S (partial beam by pattern shutter)
High: main xenon D3S (full beam, shutter open)
Here how the bi-xenon works

One step forward (on MY2010-2013) is swap the H7 bulbs with good (and pricey) LED H7...
WOW!
and this is the reason why I do not upgrade my MY2011 D4 to the new grill (but I used the hybrid PowerfulUK grill)

I have the later headlights and my opinion is that whilst the ‘spread’ of light on full (mainbeam) is good (ie it lights up the near field of vision well), the ‘throw’ is poor (ie the illumination of the road in the distance is not clear).
I live in the highlands and we have a lot of deer, stray sheep and cattle and walkers doing the Lands End to John o’Groats Route on our roads. The sooner you see the hazard, the better.
So to overcome LRs beauty over practicality design I fitted a pair of Lazer 750-R lamps and the combination of spread and distance from this set up is great. Expensive but great!

Agreed, the threw on my MY11 xenons is pretty dire, most of the high beam goes up. I also do the A9 south from Aviemore to Perth a lot in the early hours and decent lights would be useful for spotting honking great red deer. The lights on my old D3 were a lot better.
When i had xenons on previous 2011 D4 i thought it was phenomenal... DSL, are you positive yours are properly aligned? Is it possible your headlamps are only on the top clip?.

I'm probably going against the consensus here but … and it's surprising as I hate "form over function" designs … I think the Lazer grille looks a bit naff. Bit like a prototype, just cut the bits out and fill in the gaps afterwards.
Perhaps it looks better in the flesh or it's additional lighting is sooooo good you wouldn't care about the aesthetics.

Aren't your Nespresso subs coming to an end Derek ?
Should be, got to check when and make sure they both don't continue. Plus got a lot of credit with them so just going to put in a big order.
Re my lights, they are fine for dipped beam so reluctant to start fiddling, it's just a rubbish design.

Very informative thanks.
Perhaps the only option for dipped beam improvement is to buy aftermarket D3S xenon bulbs. Philips make a range. This being the most "powerful":

if you've had them off the car to change bulbs, I've found that it isn't particularly difficult to only get the top part of the slider back into position properly (as it'd the one that is visible).
so in theory you might have the units pointing slightly upwards.

I have had them off to upgrade the high beam H7s, will have a look in a bit. Pulled something in my arm loading 4 19"ers in the car so banned from fiddling with the car.
Loading into your car or getting them quickly out of the dishwasher ?

Into the car. They didn't fit in the dishwasher with the tyres on.

Glad it's not just me that's thinking the later single Xenon arrangement is not as good as the previous Halogen accompaniment.
Land Rover seems to make a habit if it, and when I switched from my Freelander (Classic) to a Freelander 2, the former had twin Halogen headlights, the latter single Halogen 'projector' style. I needed to find a guide dog that could do 60/70mph as otherwise my top safe speed in the dark was about 40 on dipped-beam as it was just useless.
My new 2016 D4 Landmark has the adaptive single Xenon arrangement and it's good, but not quite as good at the arrangement on my older 2013 D4 HSE.Gordon

Sorry to revive an old thread, but no point creating a new one for what is essentially the same question.
I drove my D4 at night on an unlit Road with little moon for the first time in a long time last night and noticed the poor throw on the headlights. They just don’t illuminate far enough ahead.
No brighter bulb is going to solve that problem so do I take it there is nothing I can do?
CheersGary
