Canoe, Kayaks and Roofbars
Since I couldn't find a conclusive answer anywhere, here's what I ended up with in case someone else can benefit.
For Thule bars, you need 3027 feet and 753 fixpoints (see http://www.thule.co.uk/appguide/). They then recommend 769 bars, which are 127cm. However, mk1 eyeball in the Halfords car park suggested the 135cm bars wouldn't be too far off, and they're not - nothing that extending the slot by a centimetre didn't fix... NB the tracks are further apart at the front than at the back - you only need to grind one bar! (You can guess when I worked that one out...)
The final requirement seems to be a bit of height: at 6 foot, even in access mode, putting a 40kg canoe on the roof is non-trivial! But here's the end result:
Note that this would have been be a lot easier if I had a D2, Defender or roof rails rather than T-Tracks - then it's easy to fit wide bars!

I use Atera bars as they are longer, with Thule kayak carriers.Arctic Frost Discovery 3 TDV6 SE, Active Rear Diff, Adaptive Head Lights, Tow Pack, Ebony Leather, Roof Rails, Mantec Guard. Tasmod Stainless Sill plates. Grabber AT's. Home made mud flaps. Side Steps back on until the next time.

Considering it as an easy option for getting the bigger boats onto the top. Would be interested in any comments on use or piccies in situ. Also comments on the fitment onto LR bars as these suggest they are 1.6m wide which is going to be quite long compared to the standard curved LR bars.

- if it can be taken of to be left in the garage very quickly with the roof bars staying on the car.

getting the boat on the roof isn't such a problem (I only mount two boats - Once I put a raft between the boats but that one has been sold) but strapping the boats ould be easier.

Anyone put a biggish dinghy like a laser pico on the roof?
The boat is quite heavy at 60Kg and the launching trolley is a further 22Kg (though I would probably leave this at home). I have a pretty good trailer but for a longish trip away I'd prefer the freedom of not dragging all the time.2008.5 D3 HSE, Stornoway, Ebony

OEM CANOE/KAYAK RACK
just thought i would add a comment, I purchased a LANDROVER canoe rack from DUCKWORTH, firstly dont use them, awful company, and two, great item.
Obviously it fits onto original bars, comes as 2 individual adjustable v shaped brackets, with 2 paddle brackets, should be able to use two either side if needed.
Great item, why buy aftermarket items!!!!!!!!

Because mostly the aftermarket is the same as the original...
The "LR original" is a re-branded "aftermarket".
And the aftermarket ( in fact the real original) is much cheaper than the LR adoption.

Nope, its nowt like that, LR is much more sturdy in design and fully adjustable. You can fit the canoe on its edge, or flat, just adjust the v brackets.

I use the standard LR bars. There is a knack to getting her up there, but once up she balances on the cross members. I use the front towing point to secure the bow lanyard and my towbar loop for the rear. 2 ratchet straps finish it all off. No worries! Pictures in my gallery.AJ

I run a BCU canoeing centre and often have to go to the local swimming pool to run sessions, 8 kids + 1 instructor = no problem for the Disco 3!
We get 4 on the standard LR roof bars by 'top n tailing' them two by two next to each other and then bung 5 short boats in the back with the seats folded down = 9 boats without a trailer + paddles, b/aids and a second instructor in the passenger seat to work pool side... result!
We can't quite do it with the TD5 we have but have managed 7 in the same fashion.
Can anyone beat 9?

Ask the police, they will have many cases of accidents with more people in the car than allowed. If something serious happens to your disco and to some of the 9 people inside, it would mean big troubles for your company and you as the owner.
Especially because for 9 people, I believe the B driving licence is not enough.
Although the d3 protects the passengers very well, it still remains a risk.Some people get by
