Got sent this from a mate.
Duo's rally commentary is a YouTube sensation
May 7 2013 5:38 AM
WEXFORD motor rally enthusiasts Neil Hickey and Enda Kennedy have gone viral on YouTube with a riveting and hilarious seven-minute video of their performance at the Carrick Forestry event.
The pair failed to finish the rally in County Tipperary after their Subaru broke down but they at least they managed to record their attempt to tackle one of the early stages before they were forced to withdraw with a damage drive shaft.
Neil Hickey may be the driver of the pair but Enda Kennedy is the star of the short film which has attracted ten of thousands of internet viewers in the past couple of weeks. Besides calling out instructions to assist his partner negotiate treacherous, windy, bumpy forest tracks, the co-driver also provides a hilarious running commentary to the stage which has the two men laughing as they zoom around the hillsides.
'You're going to ditch her,' he roars as they skid into a gripe, heaping genial abuse on to the man beside him at the wheel in his excitement. The video was given national publicity on RTE Radio via the 'John Murray Show' and on Today FM. It has also attracted widespread, fascinated interest across the UK, clocking up more than 177,000 views (up to last Friday afternoon) in total around the world, and counting.
'She's some kangaroo,' was the co-driver's verdict on the performance of the Subaru before it was sidelined by mechanical difficulties. A truck driver during the week, Enda Kennedy hails from Palace East near Clonroche while his colleague Neil Hickey is an electrician resident in Ballinaboola. They have been attending motor sport events together since they were teenagers.
Contacted last week, Neil explained that that camera in car is used in part to help drivers work out where they are making mistakes and how they might improve their technique. In this case, he decided that, as well as using the footage as for training purposes, he would allow it be put up on YouTube 'for the craic'.
'Rallying on gravel roads, you can have a bit of fun,' he mused, explaining the atmosphere of hilarity in the car. 'Tarmac rallying is a bit more serious.'
He and his friend have been the butt of much good-natured slagging in recent days with some friends suggesting that Enda should become the voice of SatNav and pranksters calling him purporting to be from newspapers wanting to buy his story.
The Hickey/Kennedy combination will be in action once more next month at a rally in Mitchelstown.
