I am confused.

Some of you say that the self levelling will try to make the body horisontal when parked on a slope.
Some of you says that the selflevelling will try to make the distance body to wheel the same when parking.

Can someone please tell how this should work?

Pictures of car parked front lower and rear higher.
Fuse 26 in place.
No sinking of rear parked in higher position.

Result:
Sinking of front only when it is parked higher than the rear. Not when parked the other way.

Attaching photos of car in both directions.

Any ideas?

As far as I know (and im pretty sure im right) it will level relative to the chassis.

If you somehow have a self levelling system, relative to gravity, I'd love to fit it to mine... would save fannying about with the IID tool every time I go camping Laughing


As for your situation. Applying a little bit of my own logic if I dare. Is it possible one of the front height sensors is faulty?

Parking "forward up" could be causing a little bit of a "flex" posture and an adjustment would be made to compensate. You might be able to test this with level ground and a brick under the front wheels, one at a time.

If any accuracy in what I am suggesting, the adjustment is never achieving its goal and keeps attempting until deflated. It would suggest that parking "rear up" doesn't trigger these events.

Hope that makes sense.

Hopefully someone will be a long to tell you I'm talking Censored .

Will try with blocks when getting closer to Xmas. Coming back with results.
Tomorrow I will get the car from the workshop.
Had a renovated motor from Oval but after huge oil consumption we found out that the second turbo was leaking and that a lot of oil was in the intercooler. Hopefully it is now fixed.
Had the intercooler changed to an Allisport and blue silicone hoses. This made the throttle house to separate. It seems that the silicone hose is too stiff. Strange

Just have to mention that both front wheels lower. Is it not unlikely that both height sensor are faulty or are they interconnected?

Okay, so it is not an air leak.. Good!
I would suspect a faulty height sensor is causing the system to deflate in an attempt to level the front suspension.
Watch this video for an explanation on faulty height sensors..

This video explains how a height sensor can throw a fault in one position and not in another, in your case parked uphill or downhill.

I think that vid is where abouts I was heading so thats nice to see.

My opinion is that its unlikely both would fail at once. If you can find out if it is indeed a sensor issue and not a wiring issue, I would buy two sensors regardless as its nice to have a spare. Up to you if you just swap both out but that way of doing repairs/maintenance is expensive

Has this issue been resolved now?
I note that nobody has been able to answer the question of why the suspension has to self level after the car has been parked up, there must be a logical reason for this behaviour, so what is it? Question

Must be the time of year because mine now appears to be putting the front into access mode whilst keeping the rear at normal height when parked.

No. Only recently started happening. I normally leave it in access mode so maybe it was there before.

I raised the issue under "Dropping...." but had no responses. I'm going to treat it to an Front Air Valve block over the break and see what that does. Like you its has had new structs and I cant find any leaks.

If you have an IID tool you can test the suspension by disabling the levelling, From the tool go to Menu->Service Test->Suspension->Build Mode.
That will at least prove whether it is an electrical fault or an air leak.

Ref suspension, I always wondered that if there was another reason of why the system wakes up to level itself and if it’s something to do with spreading the weight evenly on all four corners so one strut isn’t stressed more than another one

More than likely totally wrong and was just a thought

Don’t know if it’s helps in any way but when I had a nightmare with mine it would also drop parked one way and not another

Then thought could it be if the vehicle is tipping to one side could one part of the rubber strut membrane be exposed and over time begins to leak,then as it drops the bladder goes inside the metal strut surround and then stop leaking , along with of course the system waking up to self level , or maybe a height sensors bad connection, water ingress

Plus when I first got mine the suspension was in a terrible mess , with more leaks than a colander and wiring issues all over the place

Rebuilt several air valve blocks and then tested them with a vacuum hand pump, which was quick and easy and proved if they were 100% sound or not , think in all honesty it was down to the silica dust from the drier that had been distributed throughout the entire system caused the problems

So through using an air compressor to blow all the lines out the best I could, vacuum and pressure testing each line, also found bubble testing very effective replacing items as req

Then onto the electrical side , maybe as winter draws in it causes damp to accumulate within connectors therefore causes the occasional warning light to appear

Just learnt to take my time , testing items one by one, along with diagnostics and multimeter , electrical spray was also very useful and on occasions would cure the issue by just unplugging a connector , cleaning it and putting it back ensuring it was seated correctly and connector pins were nice and clean, along with no fraying wires, moving wires at connectors to see if anything changed , including the connectors depending on year behind the wheelarch liner or behind the headlight , including that other connector near the back wheel

Sorry I’m gassing again , lol, hopefully it may be useful in a very small way of what I’ve found from previous experience whats helped me , hand vacuum pump , soapy water , multimeter , diagnostics and of course a lot of patience as I know it can be extremely frustrating at times

gstuart,

you had problems with a D3, do think the D4 is the same?
So in the end you found that the silica in the compressor was the fault?
Have read a lot about the D3 and the compressor. Lid leaking, silica dried and more.
Nothing seems to be written about these things and D4.

Anyway. About your thoughts on the levelling. Have you found out the answer on why?

Indeed had a lot of issues when I first bought the D3 , was certainly try ur patience time that’s for sure but very satisfying in the end , ref the silica , yes it caused all sorts of issues for me as it was absolutely everywhere , main problems I found where the air valve blocks not sealing

Yes read about that regarding compressor drier caps, see the D4 I believe comes with the improved AMK as standard and apart from that I assume there’s not much difference between the D3/4 on the suspension components , maybe that’s why there’s not much info about the D4 as it’s said regarding the D3

Ref the levelling , alas my general thoughts of why were maybe

So that all corners arnt stressed out more than others, also if maybe it’s to do with the alarm system as I believe when it’s locked if any attempt is to steal it by lifting the disco with a tow truck it will trigger the alarm

Haven’t found anything concrete to say why it wakes up to self level but just my thoughts from above comments
