Car totally grounded! Dash lit up like Xmas
So yesterday I pulled over because of a severe grinding noise, assuming it was the wheel bearing.
After being recovered I started having doubts because the suspension dropped to lower than driving height and nothing I have done wll raise it, the DSC light is on, and I can’t turn it off, the ABS light has come on, a new error comes up saying that HDC has a fault, and special programs no longer work.
I already have the suspension warning light, the epb warning light and although the handbook says only petrol engines have the check engine light, I have the check engine light on.
Any thoughts? Is there a hard reboot on these things?
What does HDC actually do? And could that be jammed on or something?
Spent the entire day replacing a wheel bearing, optimistically hoping that was it but always in the back of my head not really believing it was that simple, and if course it’s no different. Help 😳

Have you had the codes read via a recognised diagnostic reader?

probably an ABS sensor fault.
The rest of the systems need the wheel speed sensors to function, so you if you a failed one, all the other systems can't work

Don’t have a fault reader, have had a friend offer but no idea what they have, I’ll ask and post the response.
Pete would any of that actually cause the car to not actually move? Something is grinding and stopping the wheels turning. It’s almost like HDC is permanently on, does that use brakes/gears etc to slow the car?

Yep.
Afaik (and could be wrong here) HDC uses the abs/dsc system to activate the brakes and keep the car at the desired speed when going down hill.
I went for a test drive in a D3 XS from Craddocks, apparently John Craddocks very own runabout, and every time the guy went right round a roundabout or sharp corner, the brakes on that side slammed on ... was the dsc kicking in
Turns out the front tyre on the right was low in pressure, and they put it down to that???
Would be worth finding an IID tool from somewhere and seeing if that will tell you anything; that and checking the tyre pressur3s ...... just in case

Better jack each corner up a proper jack and spin the wheel and see if it sounds ok.
Start with the rears as brakes can be a cause

The wheels seem to spin when lifted, it’s just when I drive it, can’t go more than 10 metres now, reminds me a little bit also of when the diff lock on the defender got jammed on.
Got a friend coming round later with a diagnostic tool but don’t know which one.
What are the wheel speed sensors and where are they?

Check that the steering angle sensor has not come adrift on the column. and get the calibration checked. If its way out of calibration the car could be trying to rectify a percived dynamic control issue that dosnt exist. Although the DSC didnt cut in, I had my D3 light up like a christmas tree & drop onto its bump stops and that was an error of 12% on the angle sensor calibration

Where are you?
I have an IID tool that can read any fault codes.

A long way North of you if you’re Edinburgh, but thanks for the offer, fingers crossed have someone coming to look at it tonight with one.

You might not be a long way from me later this week, or next week.
I travel around a lot for work.

Little update, friend came round with a diagnostic tool and found loads of coded, with descriptions too (will find out what it is and post here, looked pretty generic though.
So good news is there was a mention of lost signal from front left ABS sensor, the opposite side to the wheel bearing I replaced yesterday, and with a second person outside the car while I shuffled it about he confirmed the grinding clunky sound was also coming from that side. So he sensibly suggested the wheel bearing. As this was replaced only 18 months ago I had ruled it out, but as he said some after market ones don’t last any longer than that so just check 😳 That’s me told. He even said that might be the whole problem and the speed sensor might just not be able to register properly if the wheel bearing is totally knackered!
Well will pop out in a mo and check.
Also threw up suspension and gearbox? Coded, both suggesting possible fuses blown, so will check them as I do have a long standing suspension issue and check engine light is on.
Thanks for all your suggestions, I will be back with any findings and work done until a solution is found.
He suggested clearing codes too but I wasn’t sure so I haven’t yet, any thoughts on that?

So the wheel bearing on the other side has literally collapsed! What a numpty only replacing the one that’s been on there for at least 70k and was mentioned as having a little play, and not even looking at the one that’s done less than 20k and was replaced less than 2 years ago.
That’s what you get for using cheap crap. So driver side now has a fresh Timkin fitted and just ordered another for the passenger side. My local factors wanted £250 for an skf and the local dealers the same for a genuine one! Means I’ll have to wait for it to arrive but hey ho
