Caravan tyre change - which brand?

I need to change the 4 tyres on my TA Caravan due to age. 185/60 R15. Currently Dunlop brand - fitted by manufacturer.

It appears that in the case of TA caravan tyres they use normal car tyres(extra load rated 88).

Initially i was planning to replace with a premium brand but all the reviews are for use on cars. given the fact that the tyres will need replacing again in 5 years time regardless, i am now questioning if the premium tyre is worth it for the relatively low mileage the caravan will do etc..

I also don't know if the tyre choice will effect how the van tows?

Essentially i want to know if the more money for the premium brand choice is worth it or if there is a better brand to aim for in TA caravan appication?

p.s. I should mention i have a mover fitted and will be towing to south of France in July in case this has a bearing on choice/advice.

Any wise opinions out there?

Not sure if my opinion is wise but I have caravanned since 1969 with a variety of caravans, different sizes and different weights but never twin axle. Only once had budget tyres, no problem other than peace of mind. If you get a puncture on an Autoroute you will curse the decision to save on the tyres. Of course some budget tyres are in fact premium tyres down graded to reach more of the market. I found that on my wife's MG TF. The "budget" were better than the originals. A good tyre fitter should be able to give your tyres a good inspection and give you an opinion. Remember that the Caravan Club used to recommend 7 years. now 5 unless you inflate tyres to over 60 psi when it is 3 years.
A Motor mover will have no effect unless you leave it on. Your tyres will then have a 10 mile life.

Not on my TA as it came with new tyres 2 years ago.

How ever my twin axle box trailer which gets used everyday is fitted with 155 /13 8ply tyres, the last set cost me £196 for all 4.
Just a cheap brand and they tow no different from the original branded tyres that came on the trailer 3 sets ago.

I wouldn't think twice about using a cheaper brand, they are still produced to a minimum safety standard and your van doesn't steer or accelerate.
 Just remember:-

Had Trailermaxx put on my caravan this week (replaced originals of the same brand). Had a bit of an argument with the mobile fitter about balancing. I said I wanted it done, he couldn't understand why. Does it cost anymore? - no - then I want it done! To be fair, we started talking about vibration etc and he agreed it made sense in the end. One of the wheels was quite bad apparently!

Tyre wear won't be a problem, they'll run out of time beforehand.

Unless you tow a lot in winter, grip etc won't be an issue.

IMHO just get the cheapest ones you can.

Bought a new Swift three years ago now, fitted with Dmax tyres, but changed them last year after the second service, all perished in between the tread blocks.

Make sure you check the manufacturing date on the tyres. I was offered some that were more than 4 years old.

Swift had a lot of problems with D max and caught a cold as they played on the tyre in all the literature, I went back to Swift and got my tyres changed under warranty

Had to laugh at it really Russell, Swift stopped fitting the Dmax, owners on Swift Talk were getting upset that a different make was be fitted instead, they wanted Swift to change them and fit DMax which were in the brochures and are budget brand at best Neutral

I always fit budget but change regular-approx 3 years from date stamp. Obviously date code must be in the same year as purchase.

Hi Mav
Just bought a set of 4 tyres of https://alltyres365.co.uk/
General Tire Altimax A/S 365
185/65/14/T
£159 all in sent to my door.
Changed them at 5 years because of bad cracking, or i would leave them till max of 7 years if no signs of a problem.
Got my generals for disco cheap off them as well.
Ok still have to get them fitted but am happy with that.

Thumbs Up
 Regards
Ray
