Gareth,
I have really bad experience with STT and snow. I sailed through a roundabout in the 110 on STT (285/75R16).
The other drivers saw what was about to happen and stopped to let me through.
I changed to my winter tyres (Discoverer M+S) right afterwards and what a difference.
I travel alot over the winter in different temperatures and road conditions so I am not a novice on the white stuff.
I know the D3 is a capable vehicle, but why make things more difficult for yourself ?

I have found the STT's very capable in our recent snow conditions, the D3 has not broken sweat at anything I have asked of it.
What do you think is the problem with them?

Are you stuck in the snow .I know you live further up the Rhondda valley than me.Took me 2 1/2 hours to get home from Llantrisant earlier .Had to recover two cars from the Miskin/Tonypandy junction.

I found the rubber too hard, and the blocks to big. They were extremmely slippery.
The M+S have many more "layers" to grip the snow.
But the main thing I have found is to wash the tyre's every now and then as the salt and other stuff can block them and hinder there properties.
I see that you have had a different experience with the tyres.
If you look at the tread patterns you can see the difference between them. The last picture is the vredestein wintrac extreme, it has a similar cut pattern as the discoverer M+S.

We have had a lot of very deep snow recently, and in those conditions they have been superb. I suppose on ice they could be compromised by the fact that less rubber is in contact?

I agree in deep snow, then the self cleaning feature works great, but on polished snow / ice it will be a diferent picture, it was on a polished / compacted snow surface in which I almost came to tears.
Take the chains if you can get them. Or leave yourself a way out.IDTOOL PRO / Faultmate programing and BAS remaping services in Norway.
