Morning,
Up in the Alps at the moment. We are at 2,200m and the Disco got us up here fine in heavy snow and slush last Saturday. Didn't use chains but do have Vredesteins Wintrac tyres on.
Quick question. We are leaving tomorrow afternoon and heavy snow is forecast. Its 20 miles down the mountain (its the road top gear used for the skier v Audi test. Nice hairpins!) and while they will try and clear it I know it will have snow cover. Should I put chains on before we leave or do the cjains take away from the tyre capabilities? Thoughts welcome...

It will be easier to put your chains on before hand on nice flat ground, rather than trying to put them on at the side of the road when you find the tyres can not cope. and driving on chains on a cleared road should be no problem, just take it easy.

If you have them put them on. It will help you stop. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

What they said I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Thanks guys, used the chains to get out of the resort. Practice in advance makes a huge difference. Didn't need them for the rest of the drive but boy did we see some snow on motorways in the remaining 800+ miles. 1 lane between Chambery and Lyon, cars stopping to put chains on and the Disco with Vredestiens on sailed through.

NoDo$h........
My proudest moment was on arrival in resort at 2,000m getting caught in traffic and having to stop on one of those vicious Alpine hairpin bends halfway round it in heavy snow and slush. Then a policeman asked me to reverse back down around the bend to allow some forkwit of a Merc driver slip in who had jumped the queue. I then had to start again on the bend while the Merc driver was sliding everywhere and the Disco took off up the hill and around the bend no issue.

Anyone want to sell me some chains to fit the 17" wheels? I have STT's on at the moment, and with current weather trends it would seem my original plan of not taking chains might be folly
We are off to les Carroz for Feb half term.

Going to be in Les Contamines the same week - about 30 miles further up the road. You going over on Friday lunchtime and stopping over anywhere? I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

We are taking the Hull - Zebrugge overnight ferry. Angus can't get out of school early, and as Hull is only a couple of hours away, seems to make sense to sleep while moving! Then driving non stop to the resort. Its about 660 miles from Zeb.

Teacher training day on the Friday, so an overnight stop in Dijon (with associated vin) works a treat for us. Should be on the slopes by 11:00am on the Saturday 8) I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
