Did my front and rear disks and pads today, many thanks for the 'Brake Bible', its the Bo--ocks Thumbs Up ! it would have taken a lot longer without it.
and no spanner rash either Very Happy Very Happy

Fantastic writeup, did most brake stuff on my 2006 a couple of years ago and it really helped, thanks!!! Serviced the rear calipers today, and suggest a little errata and addendums on todays experience - had to travel light and only bring the essentials, so here goes:

- Bleed spanner for rear caliper should be 11mm, not 10mm, at least on this car.
- Add 14mm spanner for removing brake hose
- I could remove the rear caliper just using a 15mm spanner with bi-hex. Nice to know if you do not have a bi-hex socket at hand - most average sets, even from acceptable brands like Bacho does not have that (should bite that Hazet bullet eventually). However, in using the spanner method having a rachet spanner is very benefitial since the clearing is small.
- For some reason I could not find any sensors on my rear wheels - hmmm, optional?
- Maybe add a section on caliper rebuild with parts like EE500010, SEE500020, SMN500030, SMN500040, STC1908 etc. Simple enough, but I had a few gotchas.

Thanks for the Brake Bible

Came in handy today when i changed my rear discs and pads, and sorted my EPB, particularly pleased with myself, although didnt have the time to paint the calipers, as I was worried it was going to rain

Tempted to do them when the weather gets a bit more predictable, and probably refurb them at the same time.

Any how, thanks once again, beers are on me if we ever meet!

Great guide, my pads and disks all appear in good order and the EPB was renewed by the previous owner in the recent past BUT I have no idea when the brake fluid was last changed, this bible has given me the confidence to tackle the change myself. Question is are ordinary open ended spanners OK for the bleed nipples and how much fluid will I need to complete the job?

Open ended spanners will be fine. Better if you have brake spanners as it can be a pain with pipe on fir bleeding.
I use about 2litres for a full bleed.

Thanks, I'll have a look at getting a 10mm nipple spanner.

Just been reading about DOT 5.1 fluid. How would I know if that had been put in previously as I see 4 & 5.1 don't mix?

Doh! just checked again and I see I'm confusing DOT 5 with 5.1. 5 is the one that doesn't mix.

Excellent bible Bodsy! I've had a read & feel ready to tackle my next project on the D3, well almost!

A couple of idiot questions first regarding changing the rear discs.

1. I presume the car has to be chocked & the transmission which is auto be in neutral not park to allow the hubs to rotate to slacken the ERB shoes?

2. Do i have to raise the whole axle in one go to do the rear discs or can i raise them one at a time? Logistics here mean raising the whole of the rear & placing on axle stands is bit of a challenge!

Looking forwards to cracking on & posting feedback

I know I'm not bodsy, but will reply as I've done it a few times!

1. Yes if you keep one rear wheel on the ground - otherwise just handbrake off, as the diff will just allow the rotation to transfer over to the other wheel (It will go the opposite way obviously). It is sometimes easier though to put it in neutral as it gives another rotation path.
2. You can do one at a time, but I raised the rear onto stands as it saved time overall. And isn't that hard with a decent jack- You can raise it from the diff Thumbs Up
 Mark.

Pretty much as Anglefire said.
If you want to do one rear wheel at a time, chock the front wheels and then remove the flat plastic panle behind the epb switch.
Then pop t your finger in and left the lever that's towards the D. You should be able to out the car if neutral with the ignition off.
