Charging System FAULT

So my disco has not been of the drive for about 5 days and a few yards down the road i got RED BATTERY PIC, RED TRIANGLE and message saying charging system fault. i had a very short journey that was pretty important so carried on. On the way back i started to loose wipers lights etc then got gearbox fault followed by numerous others like abs etc the lost all the screens and displays in the car just as i turned into the drive.
Guessing i was running on just the battery alone and it eventually ran out of juice.

Has my alternator died? as i have had no issues until now with poor starting. Battery is 4 years old and she has covered 105,000 miles or are there some simple relays or fuses worth checking first.

If i have to take it to my local Indie who is only 2 miles down the road can it be driven if i charge the battery and make sure i turn of everything i can that drains the power?

Thanks

You wont be able to turn everything off, you possibly can turn enough off to go 2 miles with a charged battery.

Think the battery will be ok as dash is all back up now and says low battery start engine when i open the door.

So what sort of a job is replacing the alternator? and how deep do my pockets need to be. Its been a while since i have replaced an alternator and that was on a real early disco, or is it best left to an indie

Not much fun in the rain either.

Just found a you tube for alternator replacement. looks pretty straight forward and done from underneath. 3 bolts and 2 electrical connectors. Just need to source a new alternator and jobs a goodn.

So picked myself up a new denso alternator and managed to get it fitted by the AA fairly straight forward but took the 2 of us over 3 hours. AA guy not happy as I told him it should be less than an hours job.
He had no spanners on board for the fan, but shocked it off with a long blunt chisel and hammer. One hit and it freed straight up. The real issue we had was once the 3 alternator bolts were removed one from above and 2 from below gaining access through the side section being removed of the under tray, was that the large cable taking the power from the alternator had virtually zero play in it so you could not withdraw the alternator and there seemed no way to gain access to the nut on the alternator to release it. Only solution was to free the cable at the other end where it attaches to the starter. And this was the real trick as once off it came straight out. However getting the nut back on the starter when re fitting is one of those jobs where you need long fingers and serious amounts of patients to get it relocated. Not easy on your back.
I do have one question as the fan could not be tightened with the spanner set but was tightened enough that you could spin it and it turned the water pump and did not come free, and also it spins in the wrong direction to spin of do I need to be concerned? Shocked
