Chassis Repairs - MOT fail due to corrosion
Don't post much on here these days as the Discovery has been pretty well behaved for the last decade or so!! Big surprise on Friday that it failed its MOT due to corrosion! None of which has been picked up on previous garage visits nor on its Pre-MOT" MOT" last week!
I have done some surfing but can't find anything about needing to weld up Discovery 3s! I can't find anything about trouble spots either. Anyone any clues or is it likely to be terminal - which is the implication I have been given.
(I have not seen the car yet as it is currently in a compound post failure and I am hoping it will be put on a ramp for some photos Monday Morning. There is certainly nothing visible other than the normal patina to my eyes but I don't crawl underneath, I only peer.)
Many thanks

Si,
Long time, etc... trust that all is well otherwise.
When mine failed on suspension issues, it passed at another test centre with no work done between tests.

Hi there Lex, yes older, greyer (much less hair!) and the children are a lot more expensive to run than when you last saw them
....funny you should mention that as the ramp was unavailable at the dealer so they took it elsewhere.......... Is there not an issue with it now having formally had the failure recorded on the big computer in the sky? This is why I always get a pre MOT done at the place that is going to MOT it! It did need things doing before I actually put it in for the MOT proper so it was expected to pass.
Oh well, luckily I didn't need it as a tow car this weekend.....next weekend is another matter though!

I hear you on the children - last term of school fees coming up, and then all the expense of university.
A recorded failure didn’t detract from saleability of mine; there still seems to be a degree of subjectivity in areas of testing, so it may be worth a retest before the wire brush and hammerite come out.

It would be interesting to know if it is the chassis, I would be suprised if it is rotten as they are very thick, one of my old D3's (05) now owned by a friend was used to launch boats in salt water long term by the previous owners and yet it's still solid as a rock with only surface rust.Stu

....school fees being the main reason I still have the same car! I have a bit longer to go still so it needs to last a few more years!
Stu, yes I am interested to see what I get shown as well. It is hard to work out from a short sentence on the certificate exactly what the issue is. Mine is used to launch boats into the sea but it does not go in the water and it is thoroughly hosed off underneath every week..........we will see.

Couple of things.
Is it chassis corrosion or brake pipe corrosion??
Reading you post it was pre MOTd at a dealers, is that main dealers and if so I would be questioning thier pre MOT especially as it has failed on corrosion.
As others have said there have been several that have been exposed to high salt levels and have suffered surface corrosion but nothing significant. A few have now done body off, chassis strip and treat but none have found any significant corrosion that needs welding.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Would a D3 fail on body corrosion? I have no experience of separate chassis vehicles, but did note that my D3’s sills were quite heavily corroded a couple of years ago. I have tried to clean them up and reprotect them, but how well that will last I am not sure. The car is generally quite rusty underneath but I haven’t found any chassis rot , yet!
It will be interesting to find out what they found wrong on your car.Simon.

I've seen a couple of holed chassis now. One at the rear cross member and in the rear drive shaft cutouts...My D3 Build Thread

Mine passed on Friday with an advisory that the inner cills were rusty. I will ask what it entails when I call in next week. Mantec sump guard.

I am not sure exactly what it is that has corroded, other than not the brake pipes (they are mentioned separately as they are every year as an advisory!)
My vehicle did have the body off 2 years ago and was visibly pretty good. I need to dig out the bills but we did do some precautionary work while it was all accessible.
The main issue regardless of what is wrong with the car is the Pre-MOT was done by a different person which wasn't my intention! The MOT has always been done at the main dealer to get consistency year on year.....so far that has worked.
Interestingly neither mentioned the rear brakes which the tyre place picked up!
Winter tyres are another story, I have destroyed the Scorpion Winters through tread damage rather than wear! Had to change them prior to the MOT

Im pretty certain that is going to be the D3s achilles heel as the years pass.

According to check-mot.service.gov.uk your car failed on two points, first one is:
Offside Front Seat belt buckle not functioning as intended wont release under tension (7.1.2 (d))
The second, more worryingly, relates to O/S front seatbelt anchorage point:
Offside Front Seat belt anchorage prescribed area strength or continuity significantly reduced inner sill corroded through with in 30cm of the seat/seat belt mounting (7.1.1 (a) (i))
So not chassis corrosion but inner sill....

nothing is hidden!!
The buckle is not the first time, that is a recently replaced one as well!
So where exactly is the sill then if it is not part of the chassis?........and as the other belt anchorages are on the advisories..........
Can you see the sill easily from outside the vehicle or is it under interior bits? Can't find an "exploded" view.

The MOT online checker is very revealing but can be annoying:

This fail for brakes was complete hoop as there was loads left on all pads; when directly challenged I got a pass certificate and my MOT fee refunded. But the MOT history still shows it as a fail.
Meanwhile my old D3 has doubled its milage since it left me, but is still going ok it seems as it approaches its 14th birthday:
