Thanks for that riveting thread waterbuoy.
Great to see engine replacement considered worthwhile. I have already decided if fatal engine failure should strike for me then I would spend on a replacement and not scrap the car.

Top work and hats of to Disco Mickey, shame he's well over 400 miles away from me though!

Dan

I tried to give an idea of costs in the final section of the post, but without giving too much of Mike's business away.

Total cost to me was just over £7k, of which labour was less than £1.5k and engine was £4,250. You can do the maths yourself for the rest of the parts.

If people are prepared to do the job themselves then second hand Jags with sensible mileage can be picked up for less tha £1k at auction. However, I wanted peace of mind given my annual mileage and our dependency on the vehicles given where we live. For me, I didn't think it was sensible to spend >£8k on a second hand vehicle, typically with >100k miles, for which I had no definite means of knowing its history and was also unable to get any kind off warranty etc. As other current threads demonstrate, some people have decided to rebuild their existing engines and are finding that it might not be as straightforward as they had hoped. I have hopefully mitigated some of that risk for the next couple of years, in which time the vehicle will cover about 70k miles whilst working hard.

Thanks for the clear answer Thumbs Up

I'll just hope my engine keeps on going strong and keep me in my D3 for a fewe more years...
The D5 is too big of a risk if diesel is on-the-out. I just cannot risk a 50k write-off in 3 or so years...

If you have breakdown cover with most of the recovery companies they will recover a broken down vehicle to a garage of your choice, so getting the vehicle up to Mike needn't be a problem IMHO. Thereafter you have a leisurely drive in which to run in the replacement engine!

I've already managed to 'misplace' Mike's invoice as SWMBO has tidied up Rolling Eyes but from memory think his total time was just over 30 hrs. That included the transfer of parts from original engine to new/replacement, plus the work on the suspension, brake pads and pipes, CV/drive shaft gaiter and transmission fluids etc

My input was negligible (probably counter productive from a mechanical perspective) but I spent maybe 20-25 hrs on the chassis and bodywork prep and treatment. Mike (sensibly) steered clear of this element of the work.

A word of caution - Mike's work ethic is similar to mine when 'on site' in that he doesn't really stop for tea breaks and lunch etc. We worked late one night also, which was much more productive as there were no pesky interruptions from his customers. I could easily see someone else who was equally competent and experienced taking 40 hrs for the job.

Thanks Iceman - I am sure that the struts are responsible for the majority of the improvement in the handling. OE spec Dunlop ones were fitted, and were surprisingly cheap (I thought) for what they are. The old ones were still working but pretty shot:

Do you mind me asking how much they set you back?

It's been on my list of things to do since buying my D3 but it keeps getting put back as other bits take priority! Rolling Eyes

As explained above, the invoice from Mike is currently AWOL after SWMBO tidies up. I will check and get back to you, but think they were about 750-800 for the set of four. Slightly more on AF's site but that includes the VAT etc.

Great write up and really interesting.

It’s a shame the D4 engine seems so much more expensive. Haven’t seen any such Thread on a D4 rebuild though!

Great post and excellent work.
Good to see another D3 saved.
I put a secondhand jag engine in mine at 231k as the car was too good to scrap.
I’m glad I did and it is still running well and now just over 272k.
Hope it gives many more years of service Thumbs Up
