Have just had both tailgates fail within 7 days!!!!
First had changed by Land Rover Indie, but he had problems but only charged me £106.63 including new part, so reasonable, but on looking at what problem was, broken "L" shape at end, thought I could improvise on the other one. Hate to let things beat me!!
All I used was a brake cable from a bicycle and an electriclal screw connector (terminal block).
Couple of ways to go either use the existing barrell/pear end on the cable and thread through free end where "L" shaped piece would go, cut cable to size, put screw connector(terminal strip) on then put the original cable, which has end broken off, into other end of connector a screw them up as tight as possible
The other way is to cut the bike cable and loop it through where "L" shaped piece would go, cut to size, fit screw connector to both ends, in same hole, and again fit broken original cable in other end. Job done.
Must admit I have these bits to hand as I am a cycle spares wholesaler, but they are not expensive to purchase from shop all you require is:
1 x inner brake cable,( this will give you enough cable to do repair about 15 times over)
1 piece of small mains electrical terminal strip, 12 volt would be to small.
Hope this helps.

Have made a diagram of what I have done together with a picture of parts required, one brake cable (galvanised or stainless steel), and ONE connector although 2 different ones shown.
You can view these by going to my gallery, sorry drawing is not my forte, but you can get the idea.
The diagram shows using a loop of cable but as said before you can use one of the nipples on the end of the cable, just cut enough to feed through the bottom of original recepticle and then fix in connector together with the broken original cable. This must be kept as taught as possible to get best result.
