Cheap tyres or a diff problem??? |
|
I have a noise from my car but wonder if its the cheap tyres that have come on my new rims or low diff oil.
I have no leaks from my car and never have had and just had land rover service (60k miles) so I assume they would have toped up dif oil??
Basically around 15mph a drone noise starts and gets a little louder and at 30mph stays at that peak right up through the mph range (up to 70mph max so far)
The noise sounds like the sound a defender 90 with mud tyres on would experience. Now it doesnt change pitch on different surfaces of tarmac or change pitch or sound when select different off road setting.
NO knocks, rattles, warning lights etc and its not gettin worse (been there for 400 miles) and only been about 200 miles after putting new rims with cheapish tyres they came with on.
So is this my tyres?? is it my dif?? how easy is it to top up front dif oil?? and would I get a warning light if was dif oil???

Try turning at crawling pace with full lock on....thats how I determined it was my front diff that had given up the ghost...check its not the steering bump stops rubbing first on full lock....small amount of copper grease on the nipples does the trick.... "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I would eliminate they tyres first, you could try fitting the old ones or try swapping the fronts to the rear.

I was also informed by the helpful folk on here ,if the droning is under acceleration, its the rear diff,if its under deceleration its the front diff......turned out to be spot on "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

droning is constant same pitch/ tone/ volume from 15mph+ nothing below 15mph. It makes the noise in straight line, turning etc.. accellerating or decelerating even if in neutral and coast along. I also sold my old wheels recently this was before I got the noise

Dasdais, what tyres do you have fitted? Mine makes the some noise and I'm also unsure if it's the tyres or something more expensive!
I do plan to swap wheels just to test whether it stops the noise.

they are called Aventure I think, I'll check see later. Well I did understand they were budgets but so annoyed they are going in a skip 400 miles old and I'll get some decent ones I think. Just go to prove its tyres first.

I had exactly the same problem - turned out to be the wheel bearings. £125+VAT each side for the parts and a few hours labour and you're looking at around the £500 mark from am Indy. Fairly easy diagnosis once the wheel is off so no danger of fixing stuff which doesn't need it.

It does seem like the tires seeing as the noise popped up after fitting. Depending on the mileage, it is possible it's an alignment issue as well.
I agree that front wheel bearings (hub) is a very likely suspect. Several reports of the left side one going out, less common the right one.
If it was differential bearings the noise would have been gradually building, until the drone when you are going down the road drowns out the tire noise. Really does, I had the big Nitto Terra Graplers and mistook the new tires (had worn out Nitto on before) for tire noise.
Once I rebuilt the diff, the thing became quiet as a mouse. But in your case, that is not the scenario, of course anything is possible. If you have diff issues, pm me and I can guide you the the right bit of kit.
