Check your engine bay wiring after HPFP change....
Ok, so yesterday, I went to give my co-pilot CDS a hand sorting out some ongoing gremlins in his G4.
Problems were drivers side indicators not working, same for drivers side sidelight and normal beam as well as hi beam.
This was a development from the hi beam coming on when it shouldn’t and some other gremlins.
Finally culminating in the latest fault of LH ABS sensor not registering.
ABS sensor was changed from the spares box and no change.
Checked light switch and headlights themselves to make sure it wasn’t something spurious there.
So went back to ABS sensor and checked resistance and continuity, getting very variable results from the ABS plug (LH front goes direct from sensor connector to ABS plug).
Then after a bit more checking of the ABS sensor resistance values of the old and new sensor, they were comparable.
Quick check to see if either was grounding and hey presto, pin 5 that shouldn’t ground, was....
So a wiring problem and thoughts that the easier to trace ABS sensor wires may lead us to the bigger issue of the lights.
Identification of the loom and the way it routes and it became quite apparent that something wasn’t right when Clive removed the bracket which instead of holding the loom up, it was embedded into the loom.
It must be noted that the HPFP had been replaced a while ago and it would seem that as well as breaking some of the plastics, they failed to put the loom in the right place....
So here’s the bracket......
You can spot the previously square edge by the piece of Weld from where it had been snorting out!
With the bracket removed, it was clear that a bit of heat had been created!
Separating out the non damaged wires resulted in 7 cables needing to be trimmed and re joined. Thankfully all bar the twisted pair ABS sensor wires were power, so could be extended a little as it was very very tight in there.
Re joined all the cables and then fitted the battery to test before heating up all the heat shrink that had been fitted on the wires.
Thankfully all good, so lights working fully again, ABS sensor working (and still a working sensor in the spares box) and the suspension able to get back to normal heights again.
A right fiddly PITA job to do! But a fully working G4, ready for the Disco3Club Wales weekend In two weeks time. 👍
So, moral of this story, is to check that these substantial cables are back on the right place and the bracket is holding the cables in place as opposed to cutting into the loom!
The HPFP had been changed by LR previously and the last engine work that had been undertaken a while ago. Along with the broken plastics they left it with, it’s fairly clear where the problem came from....
I have found loads of cars with this loom and cables in a right mess and also fitted back wrong, when I am doing the rear belts.
Most cars where all dealer serviced until warrenty expired, I did not know you could fit them back so many different ways lol..
