A quote from VOSA - "using large commercial type trailers or trailers with high nose weights with the detachable type towbar can cause premature wear on the detachable towbar".
At the assistance of VOSA Land Rover have agreed to write to all owners of vehicles equipped with detachable towbars, to inform them of the need to use the right towbar for the type of trailer or towed implement they are using. (November 2013). Have they contacted you yet?
This is not a recall by VOSA, just an instruction to LR to inform customers that they cannot use the towbar that they have purchased from them to tow large trailers. The customer must now buy another one for that job! Why the hell would anyone buy a Discovery to tow a small trailer?
Let me be clear, I think that the Discovery 3 is a great tow car & Land Rover make world beating cars now but their customer relations dept are a disgrace in the way that they have tried to hide this potentially lethal problem from it's customers.

hasn't 150kg always been the recommended nose weight for the detachable towbar, and the VOSA notice just re-itterating that?

Watchman,

Only 2 posts in and you are confusing the heck out of people - some thoughts:

- Please be clear when you are quoting and when you are expressing your own opinion.
- Please be clear when posting 'facts'; in 2 posts you have gone from 'following instructions from VOSA' to 'at the assistance of VOSA' to 'this is not a recall by VOSA, just an instruction to LR' - I don't think even you know what you are saying.
- You implied that dealers will exchange tow bars and now suggest that this is not the case and that you have to pay - again, are you sure of what you are trying to say?

Have a think before you post again.

Thumbs Up

I thought that ALL Discovery tow bars (fixed or not) had 150 kg noseweight limits and 3500 kg towing limits? What constitutes a small trailer (my 1500 kg caravan?)? As usual, things appear to be as clear as mud.

The demountable towbar has been proven to fail if used for towing large trailers. If yours has failed report it to VOSA (it is easy to do online on their web site) they will give you their angle on this issue & you may save someone having a serious accident. Dealers are aware of this problem but will not supply a free replacement unless you get your facts right under the sale of goods act. It is a problem for LR of course but they must address it. It is not just nose weight that kills this towbar, Alko stabilizing couplings will too. If you are happy to take a chance when towing go ahead but I hope I am not about if you do. Mine failed at a very low mileage & was always within the specified nose weight & overall weight. Please disregard this post if you do not like it. I am just trying to pass on information to anyone who WANTS to know.

then like me 15+ months ago, new rear cross member, new fixed tow bar & bracket.

I now have it checked by LR every 6 months ie they unbolt the side support brackets to see if the hitch waggles..then re-torqued up at the right settings. Thumbs Up

BTW ours was a fixed tow bar that failed so not just the common removable ones Shocked

That makes it even worse .
So if your detachable tow bar is loose and wobbles when fixed in ,then a replacement fixed tow bar could fall out i guess ??
Am i rite in thinking that ,as just checked mine and its got quite a lot of movement in it now since the last time i towed /moved a mates static van/mobile home
